scar3: I was hoping to hear from you, I've enjoyed your designs in the past, and mapping is also welcome!
I had an idea for the faceless colossus in the desert, meaning very little mapping would be required. Here goes...
Note that this is a major spoiler, if I am to ever make this short horror game.
Game puts you in a windy desert, you can't see farther than maybe 20 meters, and you can hear your breathing under the cloth you've used to cover your face from the blowing sand. The only objective you have, is to see the face of the colossus, in order to tell the tale once you've left this haunted desert. As you look around, you will hear strange voices/noises when pointing a certain direction. If you keep your aim, the noises become louder, and your view begins to shake, and after a while you begin to see flashes of disturbing scenes, only to have it all disappear. No noise, nothing. As you re-aim around the desert, you begin to hear the noise again, only this time slightly louder, indicating that whatever is causing this is nearer to you. Determined to achieve what you came to do, you start moving towards the noise. The noise disappears again. You look around, and as you hit a certain spot with your aim, the noise reappears, louder, but different, as if it was a collection of very low voices, shouting incantations. You set off towards the noise, and all of a sudden it fades off, much sooner than you had expected. To add to your surprise, there stands a very tall and slim lopsided figure, facing away from you, staring into the sky. You consider what to do for a moment, and begin to slowly take a few steps towards the figure. You reconsider, and decide to stand still for a moment, to see if the tall figure decides to make a move. Suddenly it faces you in a swift movement, and your head explodes with noise, shaky imagery of disturbing things and flashes of light. You face the other way, and just as you expected, all of it disappeared. Seeing as the last time you saw the figure, it was facing you, you can't help but think that it has begun advancing on you. You make a run for it, and suddenly start hearing heavy yet unnaturally quick stomps heading your way. Once they're so close you could bet that the next stomp is right on top of you, you drop down to the ground screaming, bracing for impact. Nothing happens. Soon you stand up, turn around and see the colossus standing right behind you. It raises it's arm and hits you in a sideways movement, breaking unimaginable amounts of bones in your fragile body, sending it flying 5 meters into the air.
This was a quite likely scene of a first time play. Now, as this is a game, there's a point too. It's designed to be extremly hard, until you figure things out. You can escape the colossus, if you wait until you begin hearing slow stomps going away from you. As long as you're not running away, the colossus won't follow. You repeat this procedure until you no longer hear stomping coming towards you when you attempt to run. Once you're far away enough, the game ends by fading out to black, and in fades your finishing time.
All of the planned behaviors for the colossus will be somehow mathematically related, so a clever person (or a persistent one) will be able to figure out how to complete the game faster.
The game requires the following assets:
Desert texture
Blowing sand sprites of varying size and shape
Fog sphere
Blue sky with sun in zenit
Colossus model with animations for staring at the sky, turning to face you (four directional variations, rest done by code), running animation, stand animation, hit animation, all of them in disturbing kinds of movements
Disturbing imagery (10 or so pictures of potentially scarring nature)
Various sounds (these I intend to do myself)
I could probably do most of those myself, but any help would be appreciated!
scar3: if you like this idea, and would like to expand on it or some such, drop me a line, either this thread or PM. Or if you like, present another idea
Pointers from anyone else are also welcome!
