I live in Seoul, Korea. I'm 21 years old and currently a college student,
majoring in some kind of literature. (Surprise? ;) My real life was full
of plain games before Quake was out, however, Quake changed it greatly
and now it's full of just plain Quake. You really don't need to be curious
of me. I'm just a normal
person
who loves Quake.
Getting
the inspiration is sometimes the hardest thing in creating levels. I usually
get it from other authors' levels. There are so many authors in this community
and so many levels to play. I download and play lots of home-made levels,
and sometimes they give me some inspiration for my levels. And other than
that, all the movies, music and other games are the source of my inspiration.

I've made
four levels for Classic Quake and only two for Quake 2. However,
I'm
really embarrassed when I think of the first four. They left a lot to be
desired. As someone says, I'm getting better and better with each new map,
because every time I make a new map, I learn something. So, I think the
best work so far is the latest one, "Death Is Not
Worth Trying", although it has quite a few flaws.

There
are so many authors to list. First of course is Tim
Willits, who made a new standard for level
making. You know, there were a lot of levels better than id's original
levels for Classic Quake, but nowadays, it's so hard to exceed the quality
of Quake 2 levels. I think, however, that quality will be exceed by the
authors who are currently silent out there. For Classic Quake authors,
I like Iikka Keranen,
Matt Sefton,
mexx, Roger
Staines and all the other authors who I can't
remember the names (alphabetically). I also like Steve
Rescoe's work, except those frame rates. ;)
For Quake 2 authors, although there are not many levels out there, I like
the works of Greg Barr
and Doug Magee. |
As
a player, Quake 2 is the best and prettiest first person shooter, or just
the best game ever made by the hands of people. It's the perfect single
player game that Classic Quake should have been, and it's the most interesting
multiplayer game. What else can I say? It's a real classic. I'll play it
till Trinity is out. ;)As an editor, I also like it very much. It has the
strongest engine in the world, it has the best graphics in the world, and
most of all, it has the most powerful and creative community in the world,
which is full of kind people.
Um..
making levels. ;) Other than that, just such usual hobbies as listening
to music, watching movies or videos, reading some comic books.. and most
of all, I play LOTS of games.

I'm
currently building a level with the most common plot, 'escape the jail'.
:) I'm not sure when it will be out, but it'll out. Just watch ftp.cdrom.com.
I'm
not sure whether I'm the person who deserves this interview or not. However,
I really appreciate Igor and Quake Map Hotel for this opportunity to tell
the world who I am. I also appreciate all my friends in the Quake community
and of course, id Software for all the things they've done for Quaking
the world.
