TF Clans: Valhalla
as told by {VH}Odin
Valhalla originally started
as Clan Midgar [Mid] in early october of '97 and was formed by Cloud Strife,
as a Final Fantasy VII theme clan. Of the original 10 or so members were
me (Krunch), Barret (an awesome sniper who ended up playing only a couple
of matches with us before being kicked off the net), Dragon, Killer, Viking,
Fragbait, Sephiroth, Craven Morsnach, Doom Trooper, and Torloc, only three
still play TF today, and only two ever made it to Valhalla. Clan Midgar
started out as a newbie clan, fill of inexperienced players, and all HPBs.
From the outset however, we started off with wins against Override, Black
Watch, and Clan 69. The beating of Clan 69 was significant as some of the
disbanded Clan Confusion [C?C] were in that clan, and decided to come over
to [Mid]. With those players, more of the old [C?C] came over, and these
players would end up making the core of {VH} in the months to come.
Midgar's first loss came
at the hands of Attack, Punish, resist [APr] by a small frag margin (2
frags to be exact). From that point on, [APr] and Midgar (and later Vahalla)
would have a good relationship in TF; good enough in fact to have alot
of APr's core players come to {VH} when APr went inactive in the summer
of '98. Midgar entered the Dragon Warz III tournament as well as the newly
devised Iron Glove League within the first month if its' formation. Once
in tournament play however, Midgar got a rude awakening to life in the
big leagues. Enduring loss after loss to clans like Djedi, Dogs of Wars,
Dark Nation, Wolves Moon, and Gangrene, [Mid] was rapidly becoming an untenable
clan. By January of '98, [Mid] had a match record of 9-11 and a total record
of 15-17. Many of the clan members were dejected, and a few had decided
to call it quits with the clan. At that point, a few of the elder clansmen
and myself decided to rehab the clan. We were sick of being kicked around
by LPB-super clans, and moreover, we realized that a number of us just
wanted to have fun, while others wanted to be a competetive clan. The idea
of being a competetive clan won out, and we revamped the clan, and changed
its' name to Valhalla (as many of us were warriors who had been killed
many a time).
Two things happend when Valhalla
was created: the roster radically changed, and we absorbed two clans: Flawless
in eXecution [FiX] and TechBots [TB] (who had beaten us by 20 frags in
our first scrim as VH). Valhalla was out to revenge itself against those
clans that had beaten it, starting with [FiX], which we did with the amazing
sniping of our old HPB sniper JacobMarley ..... now an LPB, known as {VH}Thrymm.
Valhalla roared out of the gates, with a Top 10 showing in the Team Fortress
Open II, going an impressive 7-1 (#6 in the rankings of the day). This
set the tone for the impressive record {VH} was to attain. In Valhalla's
long run of excellence, we attended Dwarz III & IV, IGL, Dragon Maw,
Wells of Chaos, and the ASTFL. In 1998, Valhalla claimed the ASTFL I Championship,
led the WoC throughout its' first season, and won the Dragon Warz Earth
title. We also revenged ourselves by eventually beating DoW, DN, Djedi,
and CG. Our finest moment as a clan came when we beat an impressive Ministry
of Pain ]MP[ in June of '98. This win has exorcised the demons of the past,
and showed all the clan mambers that we could compete with any clan.
In the spring of '98, {VH}
faced losing most of its' LPBs (by this time {VH} was a 90% LPB clan).
Our answer came in the form of absorbing another clan....this time, Low
Pingin Freaks (an internet cafe basd clan from Indiana). With this new
blood, {VH} continued on through the summer in full force. Around July
of '98, [APr] went inactive due to member losses for summer vacation, and
many of the remaining core group came to Valhalla, including their leader,
[APr]Prophet. By september of '98, [APr] went active again, and we lost
a few good members to colleges without internet connections (sheesh). Our
leader (me), was planning on getting married and was expecting their first
child. With all the tumult, it was decided that the clan should disband
rather than try and replace the person that had been match scheduler, coordinator,
and web pimp for a year. In October of '98, on the first birthday of the
clan, Valhalla disbanded. Our final record was 78-26. In the future, there
has been talk of bringing Valhalla back for TF2 or other "team" game, so
you may not have seen the last of {VH} quite yet. Thanks to everyone who
helped make Valhalla one of the very best clans in TF.
I would like to express my
special thanks to Cloud Strife, without whom there would not of been a
[Mid] or {VH}. I would also like to express my special thanks to ICEGOD/Forseti,
who was my constant source of help throughout Midgar's and Valhalla's history.
And I would also like to thank Pastor/TyrAegir, and Zoalord/Gargoyle, who
made leading {VH} a great experience. Other thanks go out to [APr]Prophet
whose advice was invaluable, and [TsB]Dao Lin, who was probably the finest
clan leader I have ever met. Lastly I would like to thank all the clan;
every member who has crossed our threshold for a long or short period of
time. All of you guys made Valhalla what it was. For those of you who stuck
it out, you came to see what building a top clan was like, and for those
of you that left, you gave us the motivation to always be better. Thank
you all!
