Power-Crazed Admins
by Kurt

We've all seen them. Admins who basically kick you, or warn to kick you for reasons for various, totally bizarre and pathetic reasons such as...

1) They're playing def and you get their flag (*gasp* the temerity !)

2) You DARE to disagree or argue with them.

3) Your play is considered "lame" by them.

4) You don't play the game "their" way.

5) You keep fragging them

Being able to kick people is a massive power. I feel the need is there but only under exceptional circumstances. For example...

1) Racist or overly offensive comments

2) Excessive teamkilling or teamkilling flag carriers

3) CONSTANT spam - occaisional then ok, but constant, map after map is IMHO, unforgiveable.

You may agree or disagree with some of those but I think you get the gist.

To some, being an admin seems to be a big power kick and they can't help themselves. To others, being an admin seems to give them the "commander" role and they think they can order their team around. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with trying to get a bit of teamwork going, but being told to change class is a bit much.

This seems to be an epedemic that is getting worse. If I join a server and there is a player tagged as ADMIN in an awful lot of cases the fireworks will begin as they start to throw their weight around. This may not seem like a major problem - all you do is leave and play on a different server right? Well, yes and no. What if the server you are using is one of the few that you get a really good ping on?

I use various ISP's and servers - I prefer to use Wireplay (UK based) as you can dial in almost directly into the network the servers are on - this results in the smoothest and unlaggiest play I can find, me being stuck in a 56k dialup. So, what if a Wireplay admin decides to kick me and/or ban me from Wireplay servers? I feel I should add here that I have NOT seen this on Wireplay, it's just an example. The best servers become out of bounds to me and I would be fantastically pissed off.

I have been kicked from various servers basically because I HATE to see admins throwing their weight around - I'll always rise to the bait (not a good character trait) and tell them what I think of them because I think they are the lamest of the lame. Fine, it gets me kicked but I feel better. However, I wouldn't dare on a server I really like as I'd be lost of I was banned from it - this gives the admins immense power and way too many of them abuse it.

So, what can you do about it? Well, if it's a privately-run server then absolutely nothing. Someone, somewhere is running his own server as he or she has good comms. They behave like an arse and get power crazed and kick people here, there any everywhere. Fine, it's their server and their rules - it's not funny and it's annoying to be kicked but, at the end of the day, they're providing a free service to you and if you don't like it then you can go elsewhere.

However, on a server run by a well known ISP things change. Say the server was run by an ISP called TFC-ISP. You can dial in, get good comms and everythings cool and groovy but an admins an idiot and kicks you. You have recourse. You have contact emails for the ISP. Email them. Tell them who kicked you, where and why. If possible, get screencaps before you're kicked - the console will tell the story of what happens. This may seem obvious but I bet most of you don't bother. You should - if enough emails come on complaining about a certain admin the ISP would be mad not to do anything about it. I'm not suggesting the ADMIN is taken out and executed (a bit harsh perhaps) but a rap on the knuckles would help immensely.

Never forget people power. If enough people email with screencaps and reasonably worded emails (I suggest avoiding phrases like "that cheeky f**ker") then something WILL be done.

You may be able to tell that this annoys me and by the looks of various TFC forums I peruse, it annoys an awful lot of other people. Don't get mad, get even. Email may seem to soft option, but it's got to be worth a go and how satisfying would it be if it worked eh?
