The demoman can be a tremendously fun class to play. You are very versatile in attack and defence and you have a few tricks up your sleeve to keep things fun and interesting. As you may be able to tell, it is one of my favourite classes.

Your main weapons will be the grenade and pipebomb launcher. The grenade launcher is very useful for sending out a spread of grenades to take out any attacking or retreating enemy. These can bouce around erratically so they are hard to avoid - remember though, they are hard to avoid for you too so if you are madly trying to take out someone in an enclosed space, you are pretty likely to do yourself damage too. Still fun though. Now the pipebomb launcher. After you launch a pipebomb, it stays where it lands until either detonated by you or after a couple of minutes have passed. You can lay up to 8 at once. This is very useful for setting up a quick defence around a dropped flag or defending a narrow corridor or bridge. A spread of pipebombs is impossible to get past alive if you keep on your toes.

You have to keep alert though. If you lay a pipebomb trap around a dropped flag, be wary. Firstly, an enemy spy could wander over and grab your flag catching you unawares or a fast class could run madly at your flag then stop dead a safe distance away and you blow your pipes prematurely and we all know premature detonation is a BAD thing ;-) So, keep alert and be wary. You are likely to find that if a relatively tough class like a soldier comes for the flag they'll see your trap and come and hunt you out - if they take you out, your pipebombs will go off and they can then take the flag in safety. Pipebombs are also useful for pipebomb jumping.

Pipebomb jumping is useful for providing you alternative routes of getting in and out of enemy bases. Basically you lay a pipebomb and run over it - just as you are running over it, jump and while you are still rising detonate it. You will go sailing into the air and hopefully onto the balcony / rampart of your choice. You will of course sustain a fair amount of damage though. You can also try a double pipebomb jump. Lay down two pipebombs and use the same teqnique. You will lost most of your health and armor but, using this method, you can jump very high, for example out of the enemy flag area in crossover2. This can cause havoc with defences so I'd recommend trying to get the hang of this.

You also get loads of explosive toys to play with - up to 4 hand grenades and 2 MIRVS - more then enough explosive to cause havoc. Finally, you get a detpack. On many levels this is totally useless, though on certain maps it is vital. For example, on rock2 there is a tunnel that leads to the enemy base. This tunnel has a blockage of rocks that you can blow away with your detpack. You can then move on a bit and blow a hole in the enemy yard. The tunnel can be reblocked though with another detpack so the enemy will often do this - this can lead to great fun battles in the tunnels as you frantically block and unblock the tunnel. Just be aware that there are maps when your detpack will be indespensible and your teammates will keep asking you to blow the enemy tunnel / yard, etc. Don't ignore your responsibilities and please do what they say. If you are unsure as to what you are trying to blow up just ask. Someone will show you what they want blowing (ooh, how rude) so go ahead and play your class properly.

Overall, a great class to play both for newbies and veterans alike. Just remember, if you are playing this as a newbie, keep an eye on the console and carry out the requests of your teammates. Finally, have fun.
