The soldier is a powerful class,
both in attack and defence. With high health and armor you can take a lot
of punishment and your RPG launcher lets you dole out a fair amount too.
The rocket launcher only holds four rockets though, so always keep an eye
on how many you have loaded as reload time is pretty slow so reload at
any opportunity you have. When using your rocket launcher, it is best to
aim at the ground at your emenies feet - this will firstly ensure you do
damage, even without a direct hit, and secondly propel them into the air
or into a wall causing more damage and often disorientating them, giving
you more chance to take them out. Just make sure you don't give them a
push in the wrong direction though - if you hit an escaping scout behind
them it will propel them away from you, giving them more chance to get
away. That can be a little annoying.
You also have the ability to rocket jump. This is very useful to get onto enemy balconies on various maps, eg 2fort, giving you an additional route in if defence is heavy - just point your RPG launcher at the ground and jump, then while you are still rising, shoot a rocket at the ground and this will propel you into the air. A more advanced skill is the double rocket jump, where you first propel yourself into the air with one rocket, then shoot yourself higher but shooting the wall. You can get out of the enemy basement in crossover2 using this skill, though it can be hard to master. The only tradeoff is that you lose health and armor rocket jumping. Don't forget your other weapons though. You also have a super shotgun to take out enemies that are too far away to be caught by a rocket. Nail grenades are useful too, both for defending a dropped flag or taking out sentries, though any engineer worth his or her salt will hammer away at their sentry to repair it quicker then it is damamged. Over all, this is a fun class to play and is recommended for newbies who are getting into the game. |
