This weapons has two "modes". Front stabs and back stabs. Stab an enemy in the front or side and it does 36 damage - use it like this and you'll take a few stabs to take out an enemy and the odds are that they'll take you out first. However, back stabs are a different story. Stab an enemy in the back and it does 54 damage but BYPASSES their armor - it does all that damage to their health but doesn't affect their armor. So, basically you can take out pretty well any class with a couple of stabs to the back - get into position and hold down stab and their very unlikely to survive the encounter. Overall, a nasty weapon that has to be used correctly to get the most out of it.
