The Soldier is my favorite guy to use for one reason only: the Rocket Launcher. There's nothing which has the range and blast damage of the missile. Surprisingly, the only problem with the RL is its lack of speed, especially in large TF maps like the Well. Otherwise, the Soldier makes a great killing machine.

As the Soldier ...
While the Rocket Launcher is a VERY important weapon, don't forget your grenades! The nail grenade is great for clearing rooms, and the regular grenade is nice to lure enemies onto. Of course, the RL is still your primary weapon and thus, the most important tip is to learn to use it effectively.

Learn to predict your target's movements, and lead your shots accordingly. As mentioned before, the missiles are mysteriously slow (when compared to shotgun and sniper shots), and whatever lag you have is likely to compound the problem. It's also a good idea to aim low, towards your target's feet. Let blast damage kill your victim, since you're probably not going to score too many direct hits. You'll be surprised how effective this tactic can be. A few blasts is usually all it takes.

One very important tip to Soldiers, and perhaps other classes: turn off auto aim (type "noaim 1" in the console). Unless you're a Sniper or Hwguy, you'll want total control as to where your projectiles are being fired.

Of course, there's nothing like the direct hit of a rocket. Thus, if you're defending, position yourself so that your enemy has to run in a straight line towards you. At the top of stairs or down a long hallway, is usually a good place to stay.

Finally: Rocket jump. 2fort4. Nuff said.

Against the Soldier ...
Count the number of rockets a Soldier uses. Four shots, and he'll be forced to reload. Then its time to strike (although you should watch out for grenades). Beware, however, it only takes a few seconds before the Soldier is armed and ready again.

You also want to avoid finding yourself running straight at the Soldier ... you'll surely find yourself eating a missile pretty soon. This is easier said than done, however, in some places (most notably, the long hallway to the key in 2fort4).

Take advantage of the Soldier's slow speed. Medics especially should learn to circle strafe, while nailing Soldiers into a bloody pulp. Pyros are also rather annoying. While they usually don't kill Soldiers themselves, they leave them nice and toasty for other players.

Jump often when confronting a Soldier. They usually aim for the feet and you can either jump over his rocket or, more likely, lower the impact's damage and avoid a direct hit.

Also, watch out for rocket jumping Soldiers, especially in levels like 2fort4 with lots of RJ opportunities. Keep listening for that distinctive, "blast-land" sequence, and be ready to surprise the Soldier instead of the other way around.
