P3y0t3's Pak
Author: P3y0t3
| Reviewed: 7/5/99
First Look:
P3y0t3's Pak was officially the first TFC Pak out, or at least placed online.
(The debate is still up for grabs.) First, the file zipped is quite small, near
620 K. That's not too big, which is always a plus for us modem users.
The main of this filesize is taken up by numerous WAV files. Included documentation
is quite impressive. The author took the time to tell what each file does, where
it goes, how to install, and what he used. I wish they'd all come this way!
Overview:
The pak doesn't contain a great deal of changes in the visual department. Those
few things that it does change, however, have been well done. The single greatest
difference I noticed when using the pak was the changing of the rockets(both
for Soldier and Pyro). Normally, you shoot off what looks like a white flare.
This always bothered me, and apparently it got to the author as well! Now, that
"flare" is a "fireball", as it well should be.
The
other visual changes are minor, indeed, and are more picky things than anything
else. That's not to say they're undesirable. The author changed the effects
of blood so that there's more for those morbid, sick, twisted bastards... like
me. I love it. There's more blood and a larger spray. Also, when a a player
calls for a medic, the + above his head has more depth and activity init.
The final area of the pak consists of sound changes. A majority of the replacement
sounds come from Quake 2. Both the grenade launcher sounds and grenade bouncing
sounds were changed in this fashion, which I prefer. In addition are quite
a few "homebrew" sounds done by the author himself, all of which are
quite impressive and are now a part of my growing TFC Pak.
All
in all, I like what the author has done. It's rare for me to look at a pak and
not have a quirk with at least one or two choices. Is it worth using? Without
a doubt, in my opinion. 'Sides, it has little to compete with, now, doesn't
it? ;)
Summary:
You want this.
