Roger Staines! The most original author from the Quake1 scene finally presents us with a Quake2 map. And Versicolor Vermination (VV) certainly lives up to it's heritage. Your first view of "VV" is a somewhat lopsided view. As you turn around you quickly realize the cause. The rather large elevator you have been riding in has collapsed and lies tilted in the shaft! Architecture is vintage Staines consisting of an interesting blend of textures and lighting. At times it hearkens back to the Gothic look of Quake1, at other times its a futuristic blend of the arabian nights 2098. [For those of you yearning for the mid evil/gothic look of Quake1 this may be the closest you are gonna get for some time. I know the sci-fi fans are very happy with Quake2 but I miss that creepy gothic look.] You gotta love those big blue octagon doors and hallways. An interesting side effect of the octagon shape is your ability (and the Strogg's) to walk halfway up the side of the walls. Makes for some interesting strategy. The
lava canyon fortress area offers a great give and take combat crossfire,
as does the lower area at the water pool. Combat is tough and furious,
but it is great fun.
