Welcome
to
The
Widening Gyre, a tour de force in base level mapping. Have base maps
ever looked this clean and sharp before? What is it? Is it my 3dfx graphics
card finally kicking in? Did somebody wash the monitor screen today? Why
does everything look so sharp and clean, uhm... beautiful. It's just the
masterful work of Carson Utz, the level artist that brought us another
little masterpiece entitled What The End Is For. |
Carson
has
picked up right where he left off and has created a beautifully constructed
Quake2 level. From build design to choice of textures...it's a dream. This
is one massive base and yet at the same time delicate and fragile in it's
attention to detail. But looks can only carry a level so far, scrape off
that pretty veneer and just what exactly is underneath? The soul of a hungry
beast after your blood my friend. And it is in gameplay that this level
really begins to demonstrate what it's made of. Prepare to be sealed in
a room and face wave after wave of Strogg, defeat them and the force fields
are removed. Having trouble defeating Strogg in a certain area? Carson
has created a very non-linear map here (2 megs worth all in one level)
so you can try again with a different approach. He has also put the medic
to good use here, while attempting to defeat groups of Strogg in an intense
fire fight, the medic is tending to the wounded. |
Base
levels just don't get any better than this! |
