Suddenly a shrill whistle sounds and you cling to the cliff face bracing yourself for the now familiar artillery explosion which always follows. And then it happens, you watch in horror as the landing craft takes a direct hit and the exiting platoon bursts into a crimson shower of flesh, bones and blood. Welcome to the mind of Neil Manke and prepare yourself for the most immersive 3d gaming experience you are ever likely to have in the world of Quake 2! PC Gamer Presents: Saving Private Monkey is an all new Quake2 pak with 3 challenging Single Player Levels. After your boat runs out of gas you find yourself smack dab in the middle of what appears to be the Normandy invasion of World War II! Hitting the beach here means trying to make yourself as thin as a pencil so you can grab some cover from one of the tank traps on the beach and attempt to avoid the Stroggnazi heavy guns and small arms fire. Whew, it really is an amazing experience. Combined with the very realistic sounds of guns and artillery and the resultant body rattling shaking of the ground from the explosions, you are immediately transported into the nightmare world of WWII combat...uh...Quake2 style! Neil has done a fantastic job here. This is a first rate BIG production. This is not your typical add on level. Of course with Neil Manke there is no such thing as "typical". This is a full blown, bells and whistles, grab your gonads and settle in for a couple of hours of pulse quickening sheer delight. Neil treats
us to one of his now trademark cavernous wide open outdoor cliff areas,
as well as a very distinctive blend of concrete fortified bunker installations
and eventually european village structures in appropriate states of disrepair.
With ambient german sounds and conversations, and spectacular combat, Neil
has orchestrated a Quake2 symphony that may well be THE capstone of any
Quake 2 add-on created or yet to be created. It's that good. The resulting
nazi occupied castle is a fitting climax to an absolutely stunning level
set.
