  • Frag Gab: What was your favorite mod for any of the Quakes?

Hey everybody, welcome to another Frag Gab! I was pretty interested to see what games everyone was looking forward to last time and everyone had different answers. You can still share the games you're looking forward to this fall/winter here. But anyways, on with the new topic for gabbing!

What was your favorite mod for any of the Quakes?

We've all been playing Quake for so long, I'm sure we've seen a thousand mods come and go and I'm sure that we've seen just as many announced and never released! Which one was your favorite to play? Maybe your favorite to just fantasize about when it was announced because it looked so cool? Perhaps one that was so original and game changing you couldn't not be interested in it? Keep in mind it can be for any of the quake games, not just 1. Even Quake Wars if you'd like! Whatever mod it is, let's talk about it!

    Jailbreak, Quake 2

My favorite mod was Jailbreak for Quake 2. I absolutely loved this mod and played it into the ground!

For anyone who didn't play it, Jailbreak was a team based game where each team tried to frag each other and whoever was fragged was put in a jail cell in the enemy's base. While in the cell, if there was more than one of you, you could escape (usually through a little hole above you) and once you were out, you could hit a nearby switch to let your buddies out and Jailbreak! Once out, you'd try to get back at the other team and put them in your jail. The round keeps going until one team is able to put all of the other team in their jail before anyone is able to escape.

The team aspect of this game was so important and both roles (Being the person trying to escape or the team that's still alive) were really fun. I remember having matches where I was the last guy alive and it was so exhilarating to try and stay alive until some of your friends could escape. Too fun!

If I had to pick a Quake 1 mod, it would probably be Qball. Qball was team or FFA and the Quad basically turned into a pick up. As you held the quad, you racked up points. While holding the Quad, you only had the axe, so your teammates had to protect you from the other team if you had it. Then if they got you, you dropped the quad and the other team could grab it. That one was a ton of fun too! I used to play it on MPlayer back when.

Threewave CTF or Team Fortress for Quake. No doubt it's one of those. Hmm. Probably CTF.

There are some E4 maps that I still more strongly associate with CTF than with singleplayer.

The good old voreball grappling hook was mindblowing for anyone who was so used to humping it around those maps on foot.

CTF and TF were my first introductions to big team-vs-team video games. When you connected to a server it was a neat & energizing feeling to see this big conflict already in progress, getting to figure out what was going on and how you could contribute.

Something I'll probably never get back is my love for big teams on giant, sprawling, gimmicky maps. These days I'm really just too impatient for anything that is badly paced or balanced, but back then I was much more interested in the overall sense of place. And, probably, imagined narratives about what MIGHT happen in a cool gigantic & complex space.

Mine would have to be the single player add on "soul of evil". The gameplay is great, and the autumn atmosphere is really cool! I also loved the inclusion of a narrative, and the various books you could read. The custom music was also groovy.

For quake/qw it would be 'rune' and I remember playing a lot on the bluecherry (?) server somewhere in the states I guess.
          For Q3 I think I preferred CA...

Having never played multiplayer (I'm far too pants at games to even consider going against you vets!) I'll have to choose a single player mod.

Without a doubt it would be Nehahra and the film that goes with it. Nothing comes close for sheer ambition and scope. The AI is rock solid, the levels are populated with both good and bad NPCs, the music's great and the overall atmosphere is just awesome.

Every time I sit down to watch the film or play through the mod itself it blows my mind just how much love and work was poured into the project. It really is astounding to me.

I really, really hope Mindcrime pops back next year to pull a surprise on us for Quakes 20th birthday. Even just something like the film optimised to run in the last DP build with all the bells and whistles like hi res textures and RT lights... One can dream!

Honestly, I could gush all day about the project so I'll just shut up now. But, yeah, I love it.
I got the phone call at 4 a.m.

Kleshik! Kleshik is hands down the highest quality modification I have ever seen anybody make anywhere anytime. A lot of love was put into the game and I salute Dresk's efforts for doing this. I still play it with a passion to this day and I 'm still genuinely impressed. I highly recommend anyone to try this little gem before it too fades away into obscurity. It will leave your jaw just hanging on the floor throughout the whole time.

CTF! yes its fast paced, team effort, team oriented like DM but needs a strong team and communications.

                CAx isnt bad either

I didn't get the chance to play much Q1 CTF but I played a hell of a lot of TF! It's not my favorite next to the ones I mentioned but if I was to talk about a third it would be TF. That mod was damn good!

I haven't seen Soul of Evil before, but it looks awesome! I need to check that one out.

Rune was a good one too! It added a lot of great options to game and totally changed up DM.

Another single player mod I haven't played, but watching a little bit of it on youtube makes it one I should really check out soon.

Yet another one I'll need to check out. It's pretty awesome to see a coop mod mixed in, I feel like coop is largely ignored in Quake.

Great picks everyone! Suprised that no one had any Q2 or Q3 mods to talk about! This really is QuakeOne .

I mentioned CA for Q3 but now when I think of it it might have been CPMA that I used to play a lot! Anyway long time ago.....

long time ago, i used to play quake with something called tribal mod. it featured different weapons - some from q2/q3 and other sources. each weapon had a secondary attack, there was a railgun, flamethrower with great particle based flame and other cool stuff. enemies were upgraded too, hellknights had a secondary lighting attack. generally, the game was much harder and brutal with that mod. there even was a simple pain skin system so after each fight there was a pile of bodies covered with bloody bullet holes. the mod worked only with tomazquake and i spent a lot of time making it compatible with telejano engine. back then telejano was THE engine for me. it was my first encounter with qc. particle effects were incredible for that time.. well... i'm speaking about year 2001

i accidentally deleted that mod years ago and the mod itself disappeared off the face of the earth, webpage is gone and there are no remarks regarding that mod in any quake mod database. the mod creator was from brasil if i remember correctly. it was cool. grilling shamblers with a flamethrower is a timeless fun.

                      -------------------------------------------

but the best mod ever for me? nehahra! rtlights are going along slowly but steadily.
                      my projects so far:
                      Travail retextured
                      Tronyn in high definiton
                      Ab
                      yss of Pandemonium HD textures
                      Nehahra rtlights and other experiments

Whoops, sorry Moon! Must've missed it in the shuffle of replies. I played a bit of CA for Q3 myself and the tournament feel of it was a lot of fun! I didn't do much clan stuff when I was playing Q3 but we would just find random teams and play some games. I remember getting my ass whomped by all those with the skills.

That's unfortunate that the tribal mod might be gone, it sounds pretty awesome! Flamethrowers on Shamblers and being able to see the damage you did after? Sounds great!

That's 2 votes for Nehahra now! I've officially added it to my need to play list.

False Dawn for Quake 4 is a great story mod that I would highly recommend, but I feel like a heretic even mentioning the existence of Quake 4 lol.
