  • Want many excellent Quake mods for modernization. Suggestions?

    Hello! (:

Last year I played through Quake with updates graphics and stuff and loved it. Since then I formatted.

I'm thinking of doing a let's play for fun. Regardless i'd like to get it modded up really good again. I'm looking for some suggestions on the best ways to go about it and the best mods to get. (Last time I just got some pack with everything so I did little customization of my own) I'll be looking for help with things a few steps at a time. So for now what i'll do is just mention the things I want to tackle to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    1 - The best engine?

This is one thing i'm not sure of. I got Darkplaces before and I loved it. And as long as it can accommodate the sort of mods I want to get this should do fine. But if there is a better one i'm unaware of please let me know.

2 - After that i'm wondering about high-res texture packs. Are there many options. Honestly, i'm not too sure where to look.

3 - Sound mods. Any really good sound overhaul mods? I know there is a least one or 2 (maybe more) sound mods that re-do music for the levels. The one I had before was great but I never got it myself as it was in this big pack I downloaded...anyway something that adds dark atmospheric/gloomy music would be cool, but maybe something with a bit of a beat and groove. After all Quake is pretty high action so having some cool chunky rhythm to blow up monsters to would be awesome. Are there some good options for me to consider?

Any feedback so I can make some informed decisions regarding this would be awesome. Thanks!

    i use darkplaces

and the smc as a base
    http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-mod...mpilation.html

then i searched for replacement content on the downloads and finished works

QuakeOne - Quake 1 Resurrection - Quake 1 File Downloads
Finished Works - QuakeOne - Quake 1 Resurrection

or you can go with the all in one pack
    http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-tal...ew-spawns.html

the "all in one" has the SMC and a lot or replacement skins and models and sounds

use the read me files to set everything up it can feel like a task the first time.

if you have issues some one hear should be able to help

      1 - The best engine?
There is no such thing. There is only a best-engine-for-you.

      GB's Scout's Journey uses FTE
Seven does all of his mods for Darkplaces
      Mindz swears by DirectQ
You only have to find ANY post by Mom to see how nice Qrack is

These are all the "best" engine and I'm sure there are more.

I believe PSPQuake was ProQuake (or maybe Kurok I forget)
Baker had some neat experimental stuff in EngineX (like water caustics)

The best engine is the one that makes you happy when you play your games in it. The best engine is the one that achieves the results you desire or supports a format that you need.

You should download them all and make the current goal: finding your best engine

Hey thanks for the reply. So the "Quake HD pack for new spawns" contains everything in the SMC and then more?

Thing is, I was going to focus on high-poly monster models and new skins and stuff like that after I got the foundation set so to speak. Hench taking it a couple steps at a time.

But for a high res texture pack I have been googling and searching the forums and there is talk about Rygel hires or QRP? And then there is Quake Reforged texture packs? Is there a place where I can compare these or look at screenshots? Also, with the exception of Quake Reforged (Nevermind on their site there doesn't seem to be a place to even download their textures. Jesus Christ.) I don't even know where to download them. I'm pretty good at navigating the webbernets but i'm having a hell of a time with some of this Quake modding buisness.

And for some reason I thought there were several sound overhaul mods. I was hoping someone could mention a few I could check out to see which one I liked more.

Ya know, I think you're absolutely right. I will do just that. I only ever tried Darkplaces. So only certain mods are compatible with certain engines then?

Also, where do I find the most up to date versions of these?

The files section of quakeone.com doens't seem up to date, despite it saying latest version. It was uploaded in 2010 and LordHavoc is still making updates.

          LordHavoc's DarkPlaces Quake Modification

His latest build is from 2013

if your going to build quake brick by brick start with the smc download the "Quake HD pack for new spawns" any way and go get a sandwich its gonna take a bit...

after you have the hd pack you can look throw it and add the pk files in to your quake smc. use PAK Explorer to open the pk files to see whats in there.

add one and test it if it brakes pull it out

you will find a texture pack in the hd pack i my self do to my computer speed use only the QRP with out the extra shaders that makes the walls all slick and shiny

            hear is some other sounds
            http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-mod...music-pak.html

i know the NIN mp3 are somewhere on quakeone but i cant find them right now. for me its NIN or NOTHING

            high poly monsters and skins
            http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-mod...sters-smc.html

google can suck for finding quake mods use the search on quakeone QuakeOne - Quake 1 Resurrection - Search Forums
            sometimes it sucks too

otherwise just go throw the finished works and downloads one by one tell you find what you want. thats how they hook you in hear at quake one you come to update quake and find a bunch of cool stuff.
            then you find this
            http://quakeone.com/forums/quake-hel...ke-modder.html

and think yea that would be cool to learn and try and then its all over your hooked!

yep get darkplaces at the site you posted. the smc and hd pack are for darkplaces only. i would set that up first then look at other engines. set up MP1 and MP2 also with the SMC the links are on the same page.

In Response to your post JDSTONER -

Thanks for the PAK explorer. That will come in handy.

Which HD pack is in the Quake HD pack for new spawns?

Rygel Hires or QRP or a different one? Where can I find the others? I'd like to do some comparing.

I have to get to sleep but i'll check back on all this tomorrow.

Thanks for all the replies so far everyone.

not shure off the top of my head you just gotta look and see. dont look at screen shots to find what you want stick it in quake and play it see if you like it if not back to the downloads. i try to change up my quake all the time im never done playing with pk files

                    1)
If you're doing a lets-play for quake, then make sure its actually quake that you're running. fitzquake or directq are good choices for that.
If you're doing a lets-play for smc, then you've already decided to use smc, which generally requires that darkplaces be used.
These are two very different things.

                    2)
Wall texture replacements are fine, but personally I can't stand the monster reskin textures. They just look wrong. No matter how much you polish a turd, its still recognisably a turd, just a really high res one with super-blocky edges. Typically such replacement content lacks both coherance and thus quality, but that's a personal opinion and I expect others will feel differently. They're just... not quake.

                    3)
                    Nothing beats nine-inch-nails.
Except perhaps some proper classical music (the stuff that wakes people up rather than sends them to sleep, that is).
But hey, if you put it on youtube you'll probably be forced to strip all audio anyway...
Better to not bother with music.
If you're going to keep it interesting by talking over it, you probably don't want much by the way of sound effects anyway.

                      Hello Xombium,

I think your above quote expresses what you are looking for.
This limits your choice quite much.

In this case it would be best to start with the already suggested compilation, put together by Smith.
Simply because it offers, what you are looking for.
And you do not need to search for bits and pieces in the dust and go through all forum threads.

It is a good start. When you want to change something in the compilation, you can do it by copy/paste/overwrite contents.
                      It has a modular structure.

It doesnt matter how you play Quake. Vanilla or with replacements.
Most important is, that you have fun with it.

                      Best wishes,
                      Seven
