noobs question about darkplaces

Hello forum, maybe i know a little about qc and csqc but i really do not know about some darkplaces features, so i have a noob question for you
1- what's mean cl_stainmaps cvar?? what are stainmaps??

From LordHavoc's: cl_stainmaps 1 (stains lightmaps, much faster than decals but blurred) for blood, bullet holes etc.
