  • Bizarre lag in Darkplaces co-op

Hi, I'm having an issue trying to play Darkplaces co-op.

The game itself seems to run just fine, players can move around, shoot enemies and whatnot but i'm getting a weird 10 second delay on certain sounds and particle effects.

It only affects the person who is JOINING the game, the host always seems fine regardless of which of us hosts. Effects such as rain, particles, fire etc don't appear at all for the person joining and things such as explosions from rockets or grenades hilariously occur around 10 seconds after they've already happened.

Same goes for sound effects. Gun shots, enemy noises and so on all happen for the person who joined after a good 10 seconds or so. It shouldn't be a lag issue because our PC's are right next to each other.

I apologise if this question has already been answered somewhere else, i've tried to find a solution but so far I've only found 1 person with the same issue and nobody replied to them. Also sorry if this is in the wrong forum section.

    Thanks!

to me it sounds like you are using the SMC mod and several add-ons and the person connecting to you isnt. make sure that both people playing have the exact same files in their darkplaces setup.

the missing particles and effects are caused by exactly that. they are client-side effects and not server-side, and thus only people who have the same effect-info and particle-font will see the same effects you see. and rain and other additional effects placed in maps like lava-haze and acid-bubbles are added into the map by the client through ent-files.

so copy all the stuff you have to the other computer so your darkplaces setups will be identical. then the other person connecting will see the same effects you do.

    .

the lag i cannot help with, id have no clue what would cause this.

are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
    > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

I don't think either of those are the case, sorry.

I'm not sure what the SMC mod is, but the Quake folder is the EXACT same copy, copied directly from my Steamapps folder to the Steamapps folder on our other PC. Exact same settings and mods. It only affects who joins. So if I host, I get all the particles and the other PC won't, but if I JOIN, I see no particles and the other PC does. Same goes for the lagged sounds.

High Ping shouldn't be an issue due to the fact that our PC's are in the same house directly next to one another, and wouldn't explain why movement and actions in the game aren't lagged but effects are.

Rain? You are using some mods. Try with a clean Quake installation (only pak0.pak and pak1.pak are needed).

I am aware I'm using mods, that's not really the issue. I suppose I could wipe the lot and start again, adding mods as I go until it causes the issue to re-occur...

It would be a waste of timing trying to diagnose your trouble otherwise.

Perhaps, but it never hurts to ask in case someone else has experienced the same issue and knew of a fix.

I've played SMC in coop and I get a weird audio delay as well. I just use SMC for single player only.

Yes after doing some playing around and installing various mods one by one, it's definitely Small Mod Compilation that causes the strange delay.
