  • Request: walkthrough to play quake on Mac

    Hello everyone.

So I just purchased my first Mac (retina macbook pro) and I want to run Quake in it.

Can someone just post me a simple walkthrough on what I have to do to play quake on Mac?
I know I need the shareware version of Quake I and I used on windows (years ago) Qrack to play quake in hi-res mode. I want to install also some mission packs (I guess those are extensions to the standard game) and what else?

So please post me just a walkthrough.

    Thanks!

for any platform and any client its the same:

all you need is the paks of the game in their respective folders
-pak0.pak & pak1.pak from normal quake in ID1 folder (pak0 only if you only have shareware)
-pak0.pak from MP1 SoA in HIPNOTIC folder
-pak0.pak from MP2 DoE in ROGUE folder

and the client you want to use in the main folder.

thats all that is required to run the game, pak-files and client

    .

wouldnt be able to help you with a client though, i have no idea which clients are compatible with mac
    .
are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?
    > then make sure to check out my 'definitive' HD replacement content thread! <
everything that is out there for quake and both mission-packs, compiled into one massive thread

      Thanks it's clear.

Another question: if I want to install some new maps (to play offline) how can I do it?
As for the client, I saw that darkplaces is compatible with my mac. I also saw that there are some hi-res textures available (quake retexturing project). How can I use them?

Sorry I want to ask also how can I access the mission packs extensions. I have to rename the cartel of the mission pack I want to play ID1 or what else?

Normally your custom "bsp format" maps would go inside the Quake/id1/maps/ folder. This then allows you to start your game in your engine of choice and type changelevel MyMapName in console. In some cases mappers release their maps in .pak format. I'm sure there must be an easier way of accessing them but what works for me is to pop the pak file in a dedicated folder (e.g. MyMap) and then add -game mymap to your command line when starting quake. Like I say I'm sure there must be a better way but maybe give that a try if you want to try .pak format maps

I'm guessing Darkplaces will work in a similar way.

          Hope this helps

https://www.quaddicted.com/tools/quake_injector works on Linux. Alternatively see https://www.quaddicted.com/help/inst...custom_content

I'd recommend using Fitzquake SDL Port or Quakespasm as engine.

I don't use MacOS but from what I know you have to care about character case so you better name those directories "id1" not "ID1" and so on. Lowercase everything.

              Almost everything is clear.

              I made a cartel with
              - quake client darkplaces files
              - id1 cartel with pak0 and pak1 files from original quake
              - hipnotic cartel with pak0 file for mission pack1
              - rogue cartel with pak0 file for mission pack2

Now if I run quake it works.

              --------
As for the two mission packs, how can I access the launch command line?

I mean I have to rename the darkplaces .app file (mac equivalent to exe) as darkplaces.app-hipnotic but I receives an error back (the game starts, but cannot find some files).

              "missing or unlocatable content data"
"you may consider adding -basedir.... to your launch command line".

So how can I access my launch command line in order to specify the directory (and which command should I use)?
              ----------
As for the hires packs, this is the installation guide:

Download and save pk3 into quake/id1 folder and start DarkPlaces. Will NOT work with other engines.

              but it does not work

              ----------

If I'm able to fix it I will write step by step what I've done so someone else can use this topic as reference
