I downloaded a .wav file from the internet and renamed it to "sight1.wav" for Chthon's "sight" noise upon seeing the playing after grabbing the rune. I dropped it into the .pak file using PAKExplorer, closed the .pak and went into WinQuake and used the console to go to E1M7 to test it.
Since I'm in the console to type E1M7, it loads the level and I immediately see the following message: "Microsoft PCM Format Only. Boss1/Sigh1.wav is a stereo sample." I closed the console, picked up the rune and the sound didn't play.
(On top of this, I've been messing with custom animated textures to turn my lava into swamp water. Because of that, I had installed DarkPlaces to use my custom .tga files for my textures and put them in "[my basedir]/id1/textures/e1m7/...")
I then switched over to DarkPlaces and tried launching the level again. THIS time I get the following message: "Microsoft PCM Format Only. Boss1/sight1.wav has an unsupported number of channels (0)."
So I replaced the .pak file so it had the original sound files.
Then, since I had created a directory for custom textures and they worked beautifully, I decided to create the following directory" [my basedir]/id1/sound/e1m7/sight1.wav and test it again. This time, my custom sound didn't play when I grabbed the rune, just the original Chthon growl as it's always been.
Not to let this stop me in my tracks, I turned to using Wavosaur to check out the .wav file I downloaded. When I bring up the 'Properties' of the file, it says it's MONO, 16-bit and PCM. But still, I get those errors I spoke of at the beginning of this post.
So using Wavosaur (and this is my foray into ANY sound engineering) I chose an option that said 'Process->bit depth converter'. I chose 32-bit PCM, saved it as 'sight1.wav' and dropped it into the .pak file. THIS time, NO messages in the console when I load E1M7 but when I pick up the rune, I hear this white-noise/hissing for about 4 seconds (which is the duration of my new sound file)instead of Chthon roaring. So....it's now recognized but not playing correctly?
So I'm not sure where to go from here, but I am looking for any and all help so I can go about using custom sounds.
Thank you very much!!
