Hello ferniezombie,
First of all one thing about the DarkPlaces Quake HD compilations:
It doesnt matter if they are called "Quake Epsilon", "Quake Reloaded", "Quake Remastered", "Quake Hijacked" or "Quake Full HD with 3D and Dolby sourround", they all seem to use that silly SMC mod...
So, it directly depends how much the compilation makers understand the mod. Some do not understand how the mod works at all. Some do understand it better.
I have read a lot about that SMC mod, so I know a few things about it. Your issue is directly related to that mod and how the compilation maker integrated it into the compilation...
Original Quake uses specific effect names for its effects. That mod changes some and adds some (especially the explosion related ones). So, what you experience is a missmatch of the mods code and its effectnames.
You are using a compilation with newer code (= game mechanics (=progs.dat)) which does not match to the older effect definitions (= effect names (=effectinfo.txt)).
You are screwed....
But there is a way out: You should get rid of the broken mod in your compilation. And download and use the mod as it comes in original form (if, for whatever reason, you want to use that mod). You can simply put it into your compilation and it works.
As far as I remember your mentioned: "Quake HD Remastered" compilation doesnt even make use of the multimodel/multiskin feature of the mod, so you do not need to worry about compability. It will work out of the box automagically.
But whatever you do... be sure to read the included readmes. Life will be so much easier if you do.
Good luck
PS: And dont eat too many Puppies (like the Chinese do)
