I'm having some issues getting Soul of Evil to play properly.

  • I'm having some issues getting Soul of Evil to play properly.

    When I try to run Soul of Evil with darkplaces, everything seems to work fine but there is no sound fx for the shotgun sound for some reason.

    When I try using DirectQ, the sound is fine, but the custom player skins aren't loading. It uses the regular quake skins.

    I'm using directq 1.8.4 since it is the last build that will work on my computer. I was using the latest stable release of Darkplaces.

    I'm also using the Soul of Evil: Reconfigured patch.

    I can't seem to figure out the issue with either engine.

    as MH put it to me, DirectQ can load ANY assets from ANY location so long as its inside the root/sub folder that DirectQ exists in.

    I opened up Pakscape 0.11 and noted that the shotgun sound is inside pak0.pak like this

    pak0.pak\sound\weapons\gunc0ck.wav <- single barrel SG
    pak0.pak\sound\weapons\shotgun2.wav <- double barrel SG

    I googled for a download link and found this one ; PakScape

    I'm taking a stab in the dark and presuming Soul of Evil is a mod for Q1, so maybe it has a pak file also, use Pakscape and poke around the insides of the pak file!

    NOTE , GUNC0CK.WAV SHOULD HAVE A LETTER O AND NOT THE NUMBER ZERO. Quakeone.com censors the word 'C0CK' when spelled correctly, so, I've replaced the O with a 0 just so I can get the thing to stop censoring the word ****.

      I already poked around with pakscape, but no luck figuring it out. The shotgun sound plays fine in directq. It just does't play in darkplaces. the issue with directq is that the skins don't load. They load fine in dp though.

      And yes, Soul of Evil is a rather great sp mod/mission pack for Quake1. Been a long times since I played it on an older computer and was looking forward to running through it again.

        I'm downloading it right now, 23mb zip file. Quite hefty! This will be my first time playing SoE hope this shit's free cuz I just yanked it off Quaddicted. I'm @ 19mb so far, bb shortly

        ran darkplaces.exe -game soe

        loaded map soe1m1 , I got shotgun sounds right off the bat without issue. Are you using a presetup Darkplaces?

          Hello Legend,

          You seem to do something wrong...
          Like Mindz wrote, SoE + DP works very good together.
          Be sure you do not use any of those crappy replacement files and start with a clean installation.

            I re-downloaded the most recent dp released and used a clean id1 folder. Tried running again, but still have the same issue where the regular shotgun makes no sound when firing. All the other guns make sounds just not the regular one.

            Also, the model for the new grenade launcher in soe doesn't show and when fired, there is just an odd multi colored cube that shoots out instead of a skinned grenade.

            I wonder why I seem to be the only one having an issue? I'm on win xp.

              rainbow cubes are how DP lets you know that there are missing models.
              i'd suggest unpacking a new fresh copy of the mod


              i've btw never ever heard of some 'reconfigured' patch.
              try running SoE without it, it runs fine without any 'patch' in DP
              .
              are you curious about what all there is out there in terms of HD content for quake?

                Ok. Looks like it was cause of the reconfigured patch.

                Wasn't getting the missing model in directq though.

                It's an update to SOE by the original author (or at least I believe it is).

                Anyways, I can get it to work fine in darkplaces without the patch. Still having the same issues in directq though. Unfortunate though since I like what the patch adds/fixes.

                  Do not worry. We have emergency exits on the left and right side.

                  First of all, the original author from Soul of Evil is Tronyn. He did not make the mod that you mentioned.
                  If you want to use the mod and cannot stand the missing shotgun sound, then do this:
                  - Go into your SoE subfolder in your Quake.
                  - Then go into: sound\weapons
                  - Then rename gunc0ck.wav into gun_c0ck.wav
                  - Start SoE as usual
                  Attention: I had to write "gunc0ck.wav" with an "0" instead of an "o", because the forum thinks I am using the forbidden word...

                    replace your copy of Souls of Evil!

                    1Fresh Quake install!
                    2Fresh Darkplaces on top of Quake install!
                    3Fresh install of SoE mod

                    for shits and giggles compare your copy of SoE to the copy located at Quaddicted, not e the filesize in KB or decimal MB, look for the discrepancy! It will exist, you've replaced Quake + Darkplaces , well classic deduction kicks in there ever after.

                      Ok, so I kinda got it figured out.

                      I did the fresh install of dp and used a fresh id1. I still had the issue with not shotgun sound when I used the "reconfigured patch. I could only get it to work right in dp if I used soe without the patch. (and I realized the patch wasn't by tronyn)

                      In DirectQ, I had a pak2 file containing new hud, menu, custom weapon skins, and hi res versions of the original maonster skins. Once I took that out, soe plus the reconfigured mod worked fine. I guess dq loads the pak2 I made with priority over the soe folder.

                        nope, i saw that already last time when i looked at the link of that patch.
                        that this so-called 'patch' was not from the person who made the mod.

                        tronyn isnt the maker of the QC though btw, that would be patrick martin.
                        tronyn is the one who made the maps, patrick did all the QC


                        patrick later went on to develop the SoE code further and named his QC-modification 'the drake mod': Quake Expo 2011 - Drake (Beta)

                        which ive made a lot of models for. a bunch of the items i've re-made are also found in SoE
