  • Sound effects problem

Ok so I made a similar thread about a month ago with an issue about the sound effects not working with quake in my DOS computer which was resolved (). Now I have a similar, yet worse problem. So I actually have 2 old school computers, one with windows 98, and the other with DOS 6.22. The windows 98 is giving me problems this time. I finally got a sound card for it (c-media 8738, it was like $8 and i figured it would get the job done) and its working for all the games except quake. When I start up quake I get really loud static and the game freezes then I get a blue screen of death whereas before the game started up and worked fine, just no sound.
Any suggestions are welcome, thank you.

I'm not gonna speak for everyone @ Quakeone.com, but the historical trouble shooting that Quakers have done in the past yesteryears are being buried and lost every day.

The link above is about as good as it can get, short of someone else having the same hardware. I would recommend starting your searches like this, go to google and search

Quake "DOS 6.22" , but don't expect either a member of Q1 or a google search to immediately jump out at you, it's gonna take

-hardware FCC ID's (or some other way to identify the hardware in question)

DirectQ requires modern hard- and software, it will not run on a Win 98 machine.

What engine (exe) do you use?
Does it work with the -nosound flag?
What does it print to the terminal?

I'm running the original dos executable version 1.08 in the win98 dos shell obviously. It does work with the -nosound flag and heres what the terminal says upon start up word for word:

        ipx not detected
        serial driver initialized
        exe: 18:28:16 mar 11 1997
        8.0 megabyte heap
        vesa 2.0 compliant adapter:
        nvidia
        600k surface cache
        320x200

        sound initalization
        using dma channel 1
        version 4 sb startup
        sound sampling rate: 11025
        cdaudio_int: no cd in player.

then it freezes and the computer craps itself.
