stephen_85, what happens when you use glpro493.exe instead?

Nicholas Steel, ProQuake can run in D3D or OpenGL. Those are the 2 executables. Some tend to call them "apps" nowadays, as tablets and mobiles are more common than computers I guess.

For some strange reason when I run the gl, it lags up horribly bad. It seems like it refreshes once a second.even in the menu. I have another pc with quake from steam. I downloaded the pro quake easy steam setup. It works great. When I ran the pro quake install, it gave me a desktop shortcut to proquake. The shortcut is to dxpro. It works fine. So, because of my ingorance, I assumed this should be the way I run it on my old computer.
Thank you for responding guys.just trying to get back into it This game a little bit.

dx8pro requires Direct X 8.0 or higher installed (and properly operational), hence the error message.

Without doing this, the only Quake that is going to on that computer is a WinQuake.exe of some sort (i.e. software rendered graphics, not hardware accelerated like OpenGL or Direct3D).

Okay, I was curious because the file name sounds similar to something like a Glide or OpenGL stand-alone installer from the 90's, before OpenGL was integrated in to the video drivers.

i tried updating my graphics driver with no success . xp falls on its face now a days online. i ended up down loading the shareware version of quake and an older version of proquake off of this site.. and BAM! im back in action. the older version that i got working does not seem to have the server browser that the newer one has. i can manage without it though.
