  • ex quaker looking to get back in the mix

    Hey gang,

I used to play quake online back in 8th grade but have kind of grown up since then and lost interested in gaming. Long story short I have a new surge of interest particularly in the old games I used to play and I'd like to get back into the mix of playing online again (mainly ctf and team fortress is what i used to use).

My question for all of you is what are the essentials I'll need to start gaming again. It's quite confusing for me seeing all these different clients and stuff to choose from and what to download and what i'll need.

So, folks, point me in the right direction. All I have right now is my original quake cd I bought right from the store.
    ----

btw, im running XP on a brand new computer so cpu speed and graphics shouldn't be an issue.

    Welcome back!

ProQuake is an improved GLQuake and has more downloads than the other engines by a large margin, it is an old skool client that looks like the original GLQuake. It is simple to setup, but isn't new age at all, but a lot of players like it because it is very reliable and doesn't have many settings.

Qrack is a very popular new skool multiplayer client that a lot of people like. There are also fans of JoeQuake and DarkPlaces. Any of them can perform very well.

    Qrack:

    JoeQuake:

    DarkPlaces:

As far as TeamFortress goes, you'd need a Quakeworld client and the most popular Quakeworld client is EZQuake (site).

There are links to all of these in the downloads section above:

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

thanks for the tip. this begins to help me sort all this shit out! Sounds like I'm going to get ProQuake. But one question I have is, can Proquake players play with Qrack players or are they on completely different servers?

also for team fortress do i need to download quakeworld (i vaguely remember using this back in the day) and then download EZquake upon quakeworld or can i just get ezquake? Is ezquake just another client like Proquake or is it just one thing I need to get to run teamfortress? Do I have to download Ezquake and teamfortress or does ezquake = teamfortress?

what about ctf? is there just one ctf mod that will work with any of these clients?

oh yeah and one more thing. what program should i use to find active quake servers? i'd rather not use gamespy btw, last i knew their software came with spyware crap.

i guess that was more than one question. I appreciate your hospitality!

Doesn't matter what client you use aslong as you're using a NetQuake compatable client with a NetQuake server (Proquake, Qrack, Joequake, Darkplaces and others are NetQuake).

NetQuake is such a silly word...

as of right now, the only extra download you'll need for a ctf server is 3wave. Really all you need to play in 3wave are 2-4 mdl files (unless you're using darkplaces where it says FU to the server restrictions ;P). You can find those here:

          Thanks!

Thanks to Baker for your help and a big thanks to Canadian Sniper for letting me annoy him on AIM and pick his brain. See you on the servers!
