  • Error! Need Help! Baker!? Rook!?

    Ok, sB is having problems running his quake, this is what his problem is:

    "After several years of glpro 3.50 working flawlessly, I suddenly became unable to connect to cheat-free servers and obtained this error message:" host_error: cl_readfromserver lost server connection."

    "I tried every quake client/firewall/dns setting"

    "I also tried re-installing quake and glpro from scratch, still got the same message"

    "a problem that may or may not be related, I removed 18 trojans from my harddrive last week, one from fuhquake.exe"

    "I also have a problem using the default port on outgoing smtp mail servers...dont know if any of this is tied together"

    "I just want to play dm quake like I have for years"

    "host_error: cl_readfromserver lost server connection"

    "I dont know wtf that means"

    "I can connect to ca servers and rune quake and xhoc etc etc"

    "tried binding my ip in cmd line of glrpo... xp wont let me do that.. says unable to bind "ip addy":0"

    Somebody please post some possible fixes for him, he's been trying to fix this 4 days running now.. he's talked to everyone he knows, and nobody's been able to assist him. Cmon guys!

    A very good start to finding out what the source of the problem is to check the server logs to see if you're attempting to connect. You'd have to ask the admin of the server to check them for you. If the server logs show you trying to connect, that means it's not your connection but you may have a firewall setting, port settings, tcp/ip or udp that requires fixing. If you don't appear to touching the server at all, (please note that the following are not professional suggestions) check your router logs for clues. You could try tcpdump to see if you're establishing a connection.

      I've had this problem before. Either his glpro.exe is corrupt or it is a problem with pak0.pak or pak1.pak.

      Also make sure qsecurity.dll is in the Quake folder.

      He isn't passing the cheat-free check.

          I can't think of anything else, unfortunately. It *can* happen in other strange circumstances, but those are so rare and difficult to remember.

          If I can think of anything, I'll post back.

            Sure does sound like a trojan could be writing to glpro.exe

              do {
              ret = CL_GetMessage ();
              if (ret == -1)
              Host_Error ("CL_ReadFromServer: lost server connection");
              if (!ret)
              break;

              cl.last_received_message = realtime;
              CL_ParseServerMessage ();
              } while (ret && cls.state == ca_connected);
