    Hi all, been a while.....

Ive upgraded to windows vista ultimate but still had xp installed on a seperate partition (multiboot) , i thought i would give quake a go on vista...

Quake installed as normal as did dark places however for some reason media player 11 thinks the quake cd is a Kasey Chambers album called barricades and brickwalls. wtf.

Anyway my question is...... is it posible to rip the audio of the quake cd and insert the files into the quake folder on my hard drive so the audio plays during the game without cd inserted?

Darkplaces can play the soundtrack from a folder or pk3 file, for example I have quakemusic.pk3 in quake\id1
The structure of the pk3 is a folder called sound, and within that a folder called cdtracks, and then within that i have track002.ogg track 003.ogg and so on and so forth until track011.ogg. Simply do that with the normal soundtrack and put it in id1 and Darkplaces will automatically play the song assigned by worldspawn to the map, or you can use the typical cd play loop and stop commands and it will look at those files as the cd, and will tell you it is referencing them with "Fake Cd Track X playing..."

As for ripping an album, I myself use CDex, it works alright, still freeware iirc, and rips to mp3 or ogg, amongst other things, and can compress wavs and such to mp3 or ogg as well.

I also have the music for both expansion packs in their appropriate folder, so those songs are loaded by DP whenever I play them, rather than the normal soundtrack.

sorry i could'nt quite understand that, so have i got to make a pk3 file with a sound folder inside? or do i just dump the audio files into the id folder?

you can make the pk3, or you can do the dump, Darkplaces will look for either

          it will be:
          quake\id1\sound\cdtracks\track002.ogg

if that is in place then the contents of track002.ogg will play when Darkplaces starts and demo1.dem is loaded, or if you go to dm4, as it has that as the audiotrack as well.

peg - yes, but with this you can have distinct soundtracks per mod if you so wish. and besides, you get to run Darkplaces, which is always a good thing.

I need to steel this and put in Qrack

                    EDIT:

Better yet make it play a song per-map like e1m1.wav/ogg in e1m1. This should be put in Darkplaces too

ok in my id folder i have..pak0.pak, pak1.pak, deisl1.isu and config,

i had made a new folder called sound, inside that a folder called cdtracks.
How do i get the audio off the quake disk? there are no sound files i can see and im looking for 10 of them according to media player, ive tried ripping them and putting them into the cdtracks folder but i got no audio

i did rip them as .wma , should i rip as .wav?

You need to have them as .wav or .ogg, darkplaces can't read wmv.

wav is large as its not compressed, mp3, ogg, wma and such are compressed formats. Darkplaces reads ogg and so you should encode the wavs as ogg, which you can do with CDex.

RocketGuy: That e1m1 thing sounds like it would conflict with the worldspawn data on which track to play... I guess if youve got enough tracks for each level, but I personally think the Quake soundtrack is excellent as is.
