  • GL quake error

    Hi everyone.

When I start gl quake or glpro or joequake-gl the screen becomes black, and i only hear the sound of the game. but winquake, joequake runs ok. What's the problem?

    p.s. great site

Sounds like either your graphics card does not support GLQuake or you need to update your video drivers.

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Display -> Click the settings tab ...

and what display adapter does it show you having?

If it says Intel Extreme Graphics controller, you will not be able to get GLQuake to run.

Well, there isn't anything like that. maybe it's all about directx and opengl?

He's suggesting to look in Windows to see the GFX card u have. u can always try jq in -dibonly on the commandline..

there's written "nvidia geforce 4". nothing else.
as for -dibonly, there's nothing changed.
but there's another funny thing. When I start joequake-gl, screen becomes black, but when the player picks something or is under atack in starting demo, it becomes yellow and red.

Update your video card drivers. Plenty of players use a GeForce 4 for GLQuake.

Make sure opengl32.dll is not in your Quake folder (delete it or rename it if there is), it is a very outdated file only for 3dFX cards manufactured in the 1990's.

I didn't spot this reply until now.

                  You either ...

                  1. Don't have internet -- not likely, let's move on ...
                  2. Are using dialup and have a network connection (I hope not, dialup sux)
                  3. Have 2 network connections with broadband, usually involving a router and often involving DSL. If you click Start -> Run and type "cmd" and press Enter and then type IPCONFIG and 2 network adapters are showing, this is what is happening. (If this is your problem and you have DSL, you don't really have your router setup ideally, your router should authenticate the PPPOE connection but that may be complicated you don't know how to do it.)

                  Problem #2

If you problem is #2, you are in for some pain. You would most likely have to use the -ip parameter ... it looks like this ... c:\quake\joequake-gl.exe -ip 66.55.44.33 where the ip is your local ip. Sounds like a mess? It is.

The *easiest* solution is to use the ProQuake Launcher (http://www.quakeone.com/proquake) and then set Connect to Local IP or Net IP and see what works. One of those 2 will.

                  Problem #3

Problem #3 is similar. You have one network connection that is your LAN, which Quake is trying to use for the internet --- which doesn't work, of course.

One option to go to Network Connections and disable your LAN network connection while you play, which works because Quake won't find the LAN if it is disabled.

Another option is to use the ProQuake Launcher (http://www.quakeone.com/proquake) and then set Connect to Local IP or Net IP and see what works. One of those 2 probably will.

Let me know if this fixes it.
