  • Quake Clients And Pak Files

Ok I have been having trouble getting Quake to work on my computer(OnBoard Intel POS) and I was wondering if anyone has had this problem also. If You are using a crappy computer like me or can give me some help on a desent Quake Client (MULTIPLAYER/SINGLE PLAYER)
with PAK files for Multiplayer skins/textures/Hud Sets/Sounds/Gun skins

The choices are basically Qrack, DarkPlaces and JoeQuake.

On Qrack's page (linked above) there is a pak1.pak available for download that goes in the Qrack folder. JoeQuake and Qrack are very similar engines and anything that works with one, works in the other for the most part.

For DarkPlaces, there are several .pk3 files you just download in c:\quake\id1 that are available in the Downloads -> DarkPlaces .pk3 Section here.

There are also a lot of various things in the Downloads -> Texture section including a pack of 7 different huds.

Some people have trouble with the Intel onboard video chips; you might try updating the driver and might fix the problems. DarkPlaces seems to run fine on those on the few machines I've tried it on; some people have issues with Qrack/JoeQuake on those Intel boards (where as Qrack/JoeQuake seem to work on ATI cards and DarkPlaces seems to have issues on those, but I heard that may have been fixed recently). Fun!

Someone once said this would stop the flickering, I have no idea but it worked for them on an Intel Video board:

Save this file (the file) into c:\quake\qrack\crosshairs folder (make the folder if needed)

Then type this in the console:

          crosshairimage "reticle"
          crosshairsize 3
          crosshairalpha 0.5

          crosshairimage "reticle"
          crosshairsize 3
          crosshairalpha 0.5

You open the 7-Zip (WinRAR can open it, among other things) and extract the contents of the zip into:

                  Qrack: c:\quake\qrack\gfx

                  JoeQuake c:\quake\joequake\gfx

You can use it with DarkPlaces but I get outlines with it. With DarkPlaces, un 7-Zip it to c:\quake\id1\gfx

                    Textures go into c:\quake\id1\textures

/Is all of this somewhat complicated? Yes. Too complicated in my opinion. With DarkPlaces at least any of this stuff can be rolled up into a .pk3 archive (not supported by the other engines right now) and put in c:\quake\id1 folder. This stuff definitely needs made easier.

Try adding -bpp 16 to your command line and if that fails, try -bpp 32.

If neither work, try updating your drivers. Those intel onboard display adapters get real quirky with some of the Quake ports.

I like machines with AMD processors; they never come with those Intel onboard display adapters for obvious reasons

my comp isnt onboard anymore cuz i own like that and my processor is hella good(intel core 2 duo 2.37) already but on a crappy board it doesnt help and i prefer intel cuz when ever i use some amd the processor over heats w/o the super fan things on it so i just use my intel all the time and its been working fine. Altho i do like amd for laptops but that a diffrent story
