  • Darkplaces Mac Help

I lurked the forums seeing if anyone else has this problem, but didn't see any posts that described my particular problem.
I'm using the March 15, '06 build of Darkplaces (newest version I could get to work) and I can't get it to load any mods. They are all in the quake folder and I tried "-game MODNAME," and "-MODNAME"

The mods I've tried are Nehahra, Malice, and Zerstrer - Testament of the Destroyer.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

Also, is there a way to get Darkplaces to display bumpmapping without real time lights active? That is to say pre-rendered or non real time bumpmapping if that makes any sense. Apples use of opengl is pretty jacked so the only way to get real time lighting to work is to disable the opengl with r_shadow_glsl 0 which murders my fps.
    Thanks for your time.

Well, as a non-Mac owner -- although I do have some Mac Quaking experience -- I can only recommend the wise advice of JohnXMas:

If DarkPlaces isn't working for you try the Fruitz of Dojo port and there is also a Mac ProQuake (Universal) build in the Downloads -> Client section.

You should be able to use Malice and Zerstoerer with those. Nehahra? Well, unless you can use DarkPlaces you are going to be down the creek without a paddle for that one.
Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

On PC, DarkPlaces is a visual blast, hands down. The Mac version of DarkPlaces is far from being as optimised, sadly. Otoh, one can easily understand it must be tiresome to develop such an engine for such weak GPU equipped machines... Shortly put, DarkPlaces on OS X = frustration!

For the eye candy and much more fluid gameplay, go FuhQuake OS X and dig the internet for hi-res stuff! Alas, this one is not much more mod friendly...

Currently the best engine for OS X is undoubtly Fruitz of Dojo's GL - and now Universal Binary - Quake engine.
Quake MP 1 and 2, Abyss of Pandemonium, Zer, Shrak, Malice... They all run well with it.
NOTE: Read carefully Malice's documents though. This mod needs extra keybinds and a slighly modded config (autoexec.cfg does the trick as always) to take advantage of it's features.

If you intend to go MP, you might give a try to Woods' regular or GL ProQuake. I never really tested it for SP but it should work OK. And it's UB too!

TIP: The easiest way to run mods on the Mac is to keep all mod paks, progs and whatever other related file, together in a single own folder. Side by side with ID1 folder (not IN it!). Supposed your regular Quake config is already fine tuned to your needs: just DRAG AND DROP the full mod folder on GLQuake app. All your Quake config settings will be mirrored in a fresh new config file into the mod's folder ... Simple!
        - But again, watch for Malice! this one will need some config tweaks. Flash down the console, it'll soon be done. Go the same way for any mod with specific keybinds or config requirements.

        NEHAHRA... Yes.
Anybody having a crush on Quake HAS to go for it. If your Mac is a PPC there's hope! :d

More seriously, go here to get MacNehahra. This carbon app is the only engine to go for Nehahra on the Mac... I intended to test it on Intel Mac but not done yet. This was the engine of my choice on PPC to run anything modded Quake (much permissive engine in a matter of heavy modded packs, off-limits bigger levels and so on. Currently Fruitz of Dojo's UB engine seems to handle this job even better).

Hopefully, I'll come back soon with MacNeh test results on Intel...

          Thanks for the feedback.

Actually, most mods do work on the standard mac quake and glquake unless they use an executable (.exe). The issue isn't with getting the mods to work at all but to get them to work with a mac compatible client. My main interest is trying to at least get interpolation so that the animations aren't so choppy. Some texture treatment and lighting enhancements would be nice too but that isn't as important to me. I find the old choppy animations to be distracting and makes the game difficult to play.

I specifically asked about darkplaces because that is my singleplayer client of choice, if anyone knew of another mac client that could accomplish what I desired I would use that instead.
Btw, I can't get the dpmod to work either, that's why I figured I was just doing something wrong.

Thanks again for the help. Being a mac user in a pc world makes one appreciate the efforts of those who don't have to make ports but do (or at least helping those who can make ports) as well those who don't have to help but try anyway.

I think LordHavoc hasn't been supporting Mac OS X for a while but I could be wrong. The last Darkplaces update I see having an update on OS X is in 2005-08-18. So either get that version or I guess any version before 2006-06-06?

2007-03-12: Note: no Mac version included in this release either, sorry.
2006-07-25: Note: no Mac version included in this release either, sorry.
2006-06-06: Note: no Mac version included because my friend's Mac is currently out of commission (drive failure, already replaced but the system is not fully functioning yet).
2005-08-18: Added somewhat hacky support for Mac OS X .app packaging to allow proper Mac OS X binaries to be made.

                C*S,
Everything you wrote here is true.
But also true is that DP is not running well on OS X, despite LordHavoc's fine job.
I'm playing Quake on both Mac and PC since years now. Believe me: DP on OS X is a drag. I spent endless hours, digging hands in the dirt, to get something playable with those builds. Then one day, I loaded DP on a good PC (P4 - 2xGeForce 7900 SLI - and for sure you don't need such a rig for DP): I instantly understood I was done with DP+Mac frustration...

Just to be clear. DP is a wonderful Quake engine. But the Mac port is far from running sweet...

                .

About MacNehahra (follow up of my previous post)

Some minutes ago, I just re-installed and tested good ol' MacNehahra on a MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33Mhz.
Ran some saves and 'footage' of Neh movie...
No problem so far! Everything runs smooth (under Rosetta) in gorgeous native 1680x1050!

So Mac OS X users, don't hesitate: Grab Nehahra files and the MacNeh engine and go frag now!

                :d

OK. These posts are not really 'DarkPlaces Mac' helpers. Sorry!
