  • Qrack vs Vista

First of all I would just state that I don't know why I have Vista on my notebook and that I will eventually wipe it off, but for now it is how it is so there's a problem of course.

It's a miracle for any program to not crash under these stupifying new Windows, even though the book is 1.6 Ghz 1 GB RAM...

So, I run WinQuake on it with no problems, and Tenebrae, but I don't know why the game is ridiculously slow...maybe the Toshiba's video card is shitty, but anyway, when there's crossfire and explosions, it's turtle time - <10 fps...

So I play regular old school WinQuake.

I tried to install Qrack, but it just crashes and Vista give's me that oh so famous

    image...

So, anyone knows what could be the issue?

Tenebrae is slow on every computer

No matter how fast your computer is, it will still run slow. It's magical and defies the laws of processor speeds and graphics card power.

So I play regular old school WinQuake.
Errr. Well, here is the deal -- WinQuake is gross.

The most compatible engine with any OS, is WinQuake.

Next to that, try GL ProQuake or Enhanced GLQuake. FitzQuake comes very close after that, compatibility-wise. Those 3 work on among anything.

If your computer doesn't have OpenGL capability at all, try the DirectX/Direct3D build of Unofficial ProQuake. It looks like GL ProQuake, but doesn't actually even require OpenGL.

Then DarkPlaces and Qrack come in. Both sometimes fail to run on video cards that can otherwise run GLQuake. (DP still won't run on my Radeon laptop, and some video cards don't like JoeQuake/Qrack).

Install Qrack? You mean copy it into the Quake folder or does that occur when you try to run it. Qrack does not have an installer, it's just a zip file. Make sure you are using the latest Qrack (above 1.80).

It may NOT be your operating system, but rather your graphics card.

10:1 you can one of the GL engines above or cheat with the DirectX Unofficial ProQuake.

      Thanks for fast reply

LOL for the Tenebrae comment on defying the laws of binary

Well I asked a question and didn't describe the problem

My laptop is Toshiba Satellite A100-036, with Mobile Intel 943GML Express chipset...

I'll give it a try later today.

WinQuake isn't gross! It's just old school hard rock

Well...the ProQuake works, the open GL works...but...it's turtleing...

I would probably draw the levels faster via Logo then this...

        So, no fancy graphics...pixelate!

If you are running any GL engine very slowly, I start to doubt if the GL driver of your graphic card has been properly installed. Try updating the driver?

I'm not sure this is the case. I added a CPU clock fix to ProQuake 3.99 and it immediately resolved the "turtleing FPS" issue for someone with this problem.
