  • Darkplaces/Travail

    1) why does travail run like crap in my otherwise bulletproof darkplaces? i tried increasing the heapsize. i tried lowering settings and even setting the resolution ludicrously low. i mean it's not terrible by any stetch, but every now and then it drops a few frames below my refresh and homie don't play that, that's why i play quake

    2) i already setup a copy of fitzquake to play it, but no model interpolation in my ver. is there a beta version anywhere that has it?

Use Enhanced GLQuake -- another great single player engine (it's actively maintained/developed too).

It's the other recommended engine for use with Travail.

Enhanced GLQuake has model interpolation and is all around a great single player engine.

unfortunately that engine, as the original glquake, does not work for me in vista (could be ati drivers though)

ohwell, i guess i'll have to wait for fitzquake to implement interpolation as planned for the next release.

i am enjoying it nonetheless! crazy attention to detail abounds!

nope =( sometimes i do (only with ati overdrive though), but not for quake

i wanted to check ezquake out once for something, i forget why now, hard to imagine a reason but that had the same prob as glquake

if i boot into xp everything works fine, but i prefer not to reboot unless i really have to, for instance doom3 engine games take enough of a hit in vista with my ati card that i have to go into xp to enjoy them. it's nothing major, but i can't stand if my frames ever drop below refresh and they do sometimes (not much) in vista for demanding opengl engines like doom3, but never in xp, and i prefer to not have to resort to triplebuffering, and even that doesn't solve the problem, but at least then i would only lose a handful of frames instead of the full 30 otherwise.

whatever, the bottom line is i don't feel like going into xp for quake because quake is something i open a LOT on a whim, doom3, quake4, prey, they are more deliberate planned gaming sessions.

ati's opengl support has always been a little lackluster, but it's even worse in vista. the problem is resolution independent too, if i'm dropping below refresh in doom3 under vista, i can set the resolution down to 480 and still be down by exactly the same amount, it's freaking weird

and btw, the problem i'm talking about with glquake etc is, the game will run, but the rendering is all messed up, you can't see anything, it's not black though, it's just a bunch of weird garbage. menus/console render correctly but actual in game is naff.

Hm... all the games I've tried to play on my ATi card that artifacted were OpenGL... Doom3... GLQuake... all artifacted... interesting.

I am buying this 8400GS to replace my x1800, I know it is a steep downgrade but I have extensive knowledge of how to overclock video cards... this thing will be quick when I'm done with it. Around the 6800XT level.

One of my friends over at techpowerup.com is hosting a Doom3 server but I can't play cause of my video card. I will stick with Nvidia from now on because of the OpenGL support.

yeah i'm with you, my next card will be nvidia for sure. i'm saving my pennies for an 8800 but until then i have to deal (and keep xp around)

i'm gonna want it for quake wars anyway

hopefully my x2 4200+ will be able to keep up with it cuz i can't afford a full upgrade until at least december

it will be nice to finally have all the lighting effects in darkplaces cranked up too :d

edit/or is lighting more a function of cpu? that would suck

Lighting utilizes your GPU power. If you spend $30 on an arctic freezer, you can OC your cpu to 2.6GHz easily reaching 5200+ speeds. At stock your 4200+ does bottleneck an 8800. Here's my video card reccomendation: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814133188
