Does anybody know where I can get music for Quake? I'm looking for both the soundtracks and for in-game music. For some reason my music doesn't want to work in DarkPlaces so I did a quick search and I found
'Soundtracks for Quake and both Mission Packs (.ogg files played by Dark Places)'. I've never had in-game music for Quake Anybody know where I can get this?

It's right one your Quake CD. Or did you buy from Steam?
For ogg in Darkplaces please read the fine manual.

Well, this is a gray area but the soundtrack can be download in MP3 format at:

      http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/3488

Why is this a gray area? Well, if you buy the game from the id Store or via Steam, you don't get the soundtrack and on the Steam site they have a link to the download location of the soundtrack sooooo ....

      ---------

The next thing you need to do is convert the MP3 to OGG:

      http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search

      ---------------

      Then toss those into

      ../quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track02.ogg
      .../quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track03.ogg
      .../quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track04.ogg
      .../quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track05.ogg
      .../quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track06.ogg
      .../quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track07.ogg
      .../quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track08.ogg
      .../quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track09.ogg
      .../quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track10.ogg
      .../quake/id1/sound/cdtracks/track11.ogg

And then you need to use either DarkPlaces or Vengeance R2 to play.

/Ogg support. I wish every engine had it.

(edit = Spirit beat me to the post, which is ironic since I was digging for information Spirit posted as to the folder and naming of the ogg files).

but better yet: use Nero (or whatever u prefer) to create an audio-cd IMAGE file and mount that to a virtual drive (deamon tools / Alcohol 120%)

this way it will play in any engine

Many thanks for the link Great website too. Would it be ok for me to convert to OGG, add the ID3 tags then upload it here for the DarkPlaces section?

I don't quite know the full answer to all parts of that question. The trick about gray areas is staying on whiteish part of the gray and not drifting to the darkish part of the gray. :d

I guess I could try to contact somebody at ID (doubt I would be able to..) because even though it's their IP I'm sure they'd allow it. I mean, what's the worst case scenario, getting a C&D?

They won't allow it if you ask them. Please don't.

I actually have the music for the missionpacks uploaded:
                www.quaddicted.com/filebase/hipnotic_music.zip
                www.quaddicted.com/filebase/rogue_music.zip

Seeing how the "grey" links are posted in the Steam forums I will upload a good ogg rip of the Quake soundtrack later today.

                  Hehe, it isn't theirs. It's Nail Inch Nail's. :d

Oh. In any case I'm sure Trent Reznor would be fine with it. Trent is one of the rare musicians who makes music because he loves it, not for monetary gain.

There you go, please do not spread that link too much.
I am uploading new versions of the rogue and hipnotic soundtracks plus malice and shrak at the moment.

You should put that in a pk3 so someone using DarkPlaces can just put in in quake/id1

Right now, DarkPlaces is really the only engine that would be used with.

edit: Add -- Spirit, did you know you have a funky path in the zip? You might consider making the path id1/sound/cdtracks for easy unzipping.

Yes I know and no I won't change it.
I won't put it into a pk3 as people who want to burn it would be confused. Darkplaces is not what I suggest for playing Quake Singleplayer with thus I will not make it easier for Darkplaces users.
And I won't change the folder inside because I myself always forget which pack is rogue and which is hipnotic and I didn't want to write different readmes nor pollute the filename itself with funny characters.
                          Sorry.

                            quakemusic.pk3:
                            http://files.filefront.com/quakemusi.../fileinfo.html

I got this from scar3crow originally, I don't know if he made it or got it from someone else. Great music, it adds a whole new dimension of grimness and fear to the quake ID levels. Its also caused me to get into Dark ambient bands such as Lustmord. Good stuff.

These are all in OGG format too.

The Quake soundtrack rocks... really impressive stuff, not as standalone tracks but as a soundtrack for Quake it's damn good. Really captures the feel, especially track 8, my favourite.
It adds a nice aural backdrop to the game without getting on your nerves. Very tasteful and timeless.

And I normally don't listen to "ambient" stuff. Rather very obscure rock bands and songwriters.

To burn a mixed-mode CD under Linux:

                              1. Turn .ogg files into .wav

                              # oggdec *.ogg

                              2. create a dummy ISO9660 image (for track one)

                              # mkisofs -o thisiso.iso /etc/X11/xorg.conf (just any small file will do)

                              3. burn the ISO image and the music tracks to a CD:

                              # cdrecord -v (-dummy) dev=/dev/hdc speed=4 thisiso.iso -audio track*.wav

substitute /dev/hdc with whatever your CD burner is. -dummy to test.

Oggdec is part of vorbis-tools; mkisofs and cdrecord are from cdrtools.

                              :-)
