  • They told me Rook could help...

...or maybe someone else could too.

So... I used to play around a year ago under the name "\/"... maybe some of you guys remember me. Back then I had a different computer, a 1GHz cpu with some crappy default video card, yet I still managed to get my FPS in GLProquake high enough to have good performance.

Well, I just got a new computer thinking it'd be way better, but it's worse. I've forgotten some of the tricks I learned when I played a year ago, but I'm pretty sure I remembered the important ones (like turning off Vsync)

Anyways, first I'll tell you about my system and then the performance of quake.

    I have a Dual core AMD 3800+ 2.0Ghz processor
    2GB RAM
    19" widescreen monitor
NVidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 with 128MB memory
    Windows Vista

I'm pretty sure all of this stuff is good enough to get me more than 50-80FPS in GLProquake in 640x480, but that's all I damn well get. Like I said Vsync is already turned off, pq_maxfps is set at 999, and still I have this bad performance.

I tried regular Proquake, and for some reason my fps is maxed at 60. I switch to 320x200 and suddenly the fps is like 700, but when I connect to servers, I'm pinging 1000.

Anyways, I was hoping to play again, so maybe someone can help me here. I'm not much of a compu-guy so I could use the help! Thanks.

Strange. You should get more FPS than that in GLProQuake with that hardware. I get far more than that on a Vista *laptop* with GeForce series card built-in.

You will never get more than 60 FPS (or your specified refresh rate) in WQPRO, by the way (although it may be possible using -dibonly in the command line). WQPRO does not use your video card for rendering (it's software rendering) so video card settings do not affect it.

Try pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL and going to task manager and see if you have an usual amount of stuff running in the background or anything using a lot of CPU cycles.

If I recall correctly, you need to get special drivers from your card's manufacturer that have vista-compatible version of GL, otherwise it's not actually using your video card to render the graphics.

I just tried downloading the latest drivers from the Nvidia site... still, same problem. Only 60-80fps in GLPro. I don't get it... it's like you said Zop, like it's not actually using my video card for the graphics. I don't know what I have to do to get it to work...

Quake engines (programs) usually say what they use for drivers when they load. If I try to alt+tab before it's done loading, it seems to fail loading the ATI driver, and it says MSI Generic Driver (It's one of the first lines quake displays in the console when it's opened)

What does it say for you?

Well, when I run it and scroll up to the top, where it says GL_VENDOR and GL_RENDERER, it says the info from my vid card. Nvidia, GeForce 6150, etc...

            This is really puzzling...

My only guess is that it's not compatible with GL, or something strange is causing it like a bad chip (which you could tell if you have the same problem with another game) or some other software you have running.
