  • Says I need Registered version...

Hi all, I hope you can help me. I am an old-school Quake player who just recently got back into it. I really just want to play the single player misisons and use the Reaper bots which I think are endless fun. Well, I have the full version of Quake (I just BOUGHT it from idsoftware online) and whenever I try to use the Reaper bot with the -game command, the game starts up briefly and then says that I need the registered version to play modded games! What gives?? Thanks in advance!

I'm no Quake expert but as i recall one of the things the registered version does is puts an extra .pak file in the id1 folder. Which .pak files do you have there?

Just in case its a problem with the mod rather than quake, do you get the same problems trying to run other mods such as Quake slide, travail, etc?

    Kind regards

I'm 99% sure that you'll legally be able to play the full version of quake using Synq:
      http://synq.quakedev.com/synq-alpha-007.7z

Don't replace any of your files but put these 2 pak files into your id1 folder and you should be able to play full version quake. You will need to use Darkplaces to run Synq if I recall correctly.

Well, I do have both .pak files in the ID1 folder so I don't understand why it is not working! I have yet to try any other mods, maybe I will do that next. As far as Synq, don't I already have the full version? I've tried JoeQuake and ProQuake but both give me the same answer.

If you can connect to bomber.quakeone.com [connect bomber.quakeone.com] just fine then yes you do have the full version of quake and I'd be very confused on why the reaper bots say you don't.

Hmmm...I'll try that. Excuse my noobness, but is that something to be typed into the console? (Like I said, I'm mainly a single player guy )

Yes, you type that in the console.

Press the ~ key to get to the console, and type in:

              connect bomber.quakeone.com

That will connect you to an online server.

What .exe are you using? Try http://user.tninet.se/~xir870k/glquakebjp.zip instead.

                    The real answer:

You have created a Windows shortcut to start this and need to set the "start in" directory to your Quake folder (or you have a batch file that does not set the proper directory -- less likely but can happen).

Right click the shortcut and then click properties and then change/set the "start in" folder to your Quake folder, so put "c:\program files\quake" (with the quotes, substituting whatever folder is your Quake folder) in there. Then click apply and start it and it will work.

(Why this is happening is that without the start-in folder being specified, Windows is going to use the Windows folder. Quake is old fashioned and does not check where it has been run from. It starts, tries to find pop.lmp in pak1.pak (because it is not finding anything!) and fails to find it and then says hey "you can't use -game".

                    Worst error message ever.)
