  • rtlights Darkplaces

Hi, I just picked up Quake again for the first time in 10 years and was amazed at what people have been doing for this game. Anyway everything is running great , I am using darkplaces and just added my pak files and created an Id1 folder, I have got that nice 900MB+ texture pack by rygel which looks gorgeous.

The problems arise when I switch on rtlights in game, the framerate drops from around 100+ to about 16-50, mostly 16.
Also all water/lava etc looks very weird low quality, actually the water and lava looks weird without rtlights on. I have downloaded and added romi rtlights pk3 files which I placed in the Id1 folder and that had no impact. This all happens with and without those juicy textures, they don't impact my fps.

Any idea why rtlights would be dropping the framerate so much?

My system, just in case its just my PC is:,

    CPU AMD X2 4200+
    3GB DDR400
    Graphics card: pci-e ATI X1950pro 512mb

Easy fix and I shall explain. When you use rtworld your framerate will drop because darkplaces is doing more work than it should trying to calculate every inch of the map to see what needs shadow, bloom, etc. There are rtlight files that remove this calculation and offer a smoother game.

Here's how you get these rtlight files. Download dpmod from the darkplaces website and extract the romi_rtlights.pk3 and romi_rtlights_dm.pk3 files from it. Then put those files into your id1 folder. Done! Enjoy

Cheers, I already have those files in the Id1 folder and they didn't seem to do anything. Maybe i will reinstall everything. I have been putting files in and taking them out of that folder all day.

I have just removed everything and put it back together, it seems to have worked. Getting better frame rates, although by switching RT World on the drop from 150fps to 35fps, still thats more fine for a smooth game.

Water etc still looks very weird and low quality compared with the rest of the world.

Oh are you using the reflective water scripts? That will REALLY lag your FPS

OR do you mean what art style rygel chose in his texture pack? I use this incomplete set of textures instead of rygel's.

I like the look of those, I re-installed everything and the water came out looking fine, I was just using the standard textures from rygel's. I will give those other ones a try.

How do I use these other ones with Darkplace? or should i just install them into my original quake install?
