  • quake becomes jerky after 20 minutes

So i recently reformatted my hard drive, and now i find that my quake client, GLpro, becomes jerky after 23 minutes of play--it looks kinda like it's skipping every other 10 frames or something. i have to restart to make it go away, then i get another 23 minutes of play. also, demos start to play hyper fast. changing my maxfps has no effect, and i've checked that my max fps is not higher than my monitor's refresh rate. sounds like a memory issue? i'm pretty sure i have all my drivers installed now, chipset, gpu, etc. Any idea how to fix this??? i miss my quake

Does it happen in any other games? Other Quake clients?

I've noticed this happens sometimes when I have MSN on the taskbar and I get a popup or other activity like autoupdate is doing stuff in the background...while playing Quake
Maybe try killing off some background tasks?

        Hi spooks,

When it happens you might have a look in your task manager to see what processes are hogging the CPU or Memory. This may lead you to the culprit program/process.
If not that as Rook quite rightly said try temporarily turning off as much as possible, such as any messenger clients, anti virus updates, Windows updates, Find Fast/Disk Indexing, Email clients, auto-refreshing web pages and so on. This may well help you to isolate the problem and possibly point towards a solution/workaround.

Just in case, although very unlikely, it is quake based do you get the same problem using other quake clients such as Qrack or DP? Is it the same on all servers? Do you get similar symptoms using any other network based applications (e.g. web sites loading really slowly around the same time or Downloads dropping transfer rates in the same manner)?

Although the evidence so far suggests the problem could be based on your machine you might also consider viewing your firewall logs for incoming and outgoing traffic peaking around the problem timeframe

        Hope this helps

        Kind regards

        Monty

I would check you're computer for proper ventilation and also mybe cleanit out if you have lots a dust stuck in fans/cpu. I would suspect that you are overheating you're video card. Might wanna check that out, my 2 cents.

hmm definitely a good idea. But i dont think it is the issue, because it wasn't happening before i reformatted my hard drive, and since then I haven't changed the layout of my PCI cards or anything. the ventilation is good because it is a prebuilt and i havent added that much to it, and the fans are clean. i will try using some different clients like monty said and get back to you guys. thanks for all the help!

No the ventilation isn't good because it is a prebuilt. In fact, my closed case with no airflow and a missing 5.25" cover has better ventilation. The only fans it has is the PCI slot blower I have and my psu fan. The CPU fan just sits there and runs. My video card doesn't have a fan.
