  • Changing Sensitivity

Someone recommended I up'd my sensitivity, so I did and it helped. But the problem is I can't aim as precisely as I could before. Seems the higher the sensitivity the less accurately I can aim. Can anyone help me out with this? Is there other things I can change as well to fix this?

I switched from default fov and sensitivity to fov 128 and sensitivity 60 a while back and it took me a long time to get used to it. The positive part about it is that I barely have to move the mouse to aim. You'll get used to the aiming eventually. Give it time. That's the only good advice I can think of. Maybe use -dinput?

wow, no. Lowere sensitivity and fov 90 make shafting a lot easier. Being more accurate with the shaft makes you a much more difficuly player to kill.

I use fov 90 and sensitivity 1.7. I'm using -dinput and my mouse is 1600 dpi.

I use sens 1, m_yaw 0.09 and m_pitch -0.09 with a 1600 dpi mouse and no mouse accel. That roughly translates to a standard sens of 5, just a tad higher than default. But you have to remember that the default was chosen in a time of <400 dpi mice. So a sensitivity of 5 with a 1600 dpi mouse is in fact a rather high sens.

It's true that you have better aim with lower sens, and to my knowledge CS players use extremely low sens for those headshots and the sniper stuff (as do Q2 railers.) Most QW players set it rather high though, because of the amount of turning, circle strafing and flickshots involved. You must factor in the dpi of the mouse, too. Higher dpi=higher effective sensitivity. Some high sens players use lower dpi mice, like 800 or even 400, which explains part of it.

Sens 60 with the standard yaw/pitch settings and with a 1600 dpi mouse is outrageous, unplayable for me. I just tried that and it seems you move the mouse with the fingertips only? Are you sure that your mouse is really set to 1600 dpi, and your m_pitch and m_yaw are both the standard 0.022?

Lower sens = better aim, higher sens = better movement, roughly. I've heard some players have a shaft alias that reduces the sensitivity just for shafting, but you'd have to get used to that, and it would hinder your movement I guess.

If you want a better explanation, I could make a quake demo for you demonstrating myself doing a full 360 turn by moving the mouse 1 inch to the right

You'd have to film yourself doing that, because your mouse isn't in Quake demos, so please consider not doing it ;-)

j/k, 1 inch for a 360 is about what I figured. That's crazy. But if it suits you, fine.

Guys, mice and settings are different for each OS.

To determine the optimal sensitivity, pick a referrence point in front of you and do a 180 spin with a flick of your wrist and adjust it accordingly until you can do it comfortably and your crosshair hits the intended mark behind you at 180 degrees.

How do you find out what your mouse's dpi is?

                  Depends what mouse you use.

                  - Look it up in the driver or control software if you use one (Razer or Logitech), easiest way

                  - Look it up on the net (manufacturer's page), it should have a default DPI setting that will get used if you changed nothing; some older mice and laptop mice only have one DPI setting

                  - Comparison; if you have one mouse and you know it only does 400 dpi, and another has a much higher sens, it's either 800 or 1600 (feeling)

                  - there is probably a way to measure it, but I don't know it.

Combine some of those methods and you'll find out.
