  • Glpro and resolution

Hi, can you give me the exact syntax for the command line to set glpro.exe or quake.exe to 1280, i've tried many times but with no luck. is it the glpro.exe or the quake.exe that need the mods?

    thanks.

    glpro.exe -width 1280 -conwidth 640 -height 1024 -conheight 512

conheight and conwidth is used for text if I recall correctly. It's standard to keep them half the size of your width and height values.

Or use ProQuake 3.99r and just go to Video Options and set the mode in the client.

or use -current to just get the desktop resolution in most quake engines.

watch out if you're using -width and -height on a standard glquake.exe, as the internal video mode list isn't big enough to support the resolutions provided by most modern monitors.

also, none of the above will get you 32 bit rendering, you'll need to add -bpp 32.

it seems sensible to rework the engine to automtically start up at the desktop resolution and colour depth if no command-line options are supplied, doesn't it?

is 32 or 16 bpp desirable for best fps? / fastest game

16 is a little faster, but you won't notice the difference between 16 and 32 in ProQuake unless the graphics card is *really*, *really* old.

I have a "crappy" video card by most people's standards, a GeForce 5200FX which is about the same thing as a GeForce 4 (from 2002) and I get 300-400 FPS easy with 32 bpp.

Try both with pq_drawfps and see what you think with each -bpp.

The advantage of using the desktop resolution (32 bits per pixel for virtually anyone with WinXP) is that, for instance, in ProQuake 3.99r you can press ALT-ENTER and instantly switch from fullscreen to windowed mode [because the bits per pixel matches].

/Graphics intensive engines like Qrack or DarkPlaces, you can see an FPS difference between 16 and 32 bpp. Particularly DarkPlaces due to the lighting.

in my experience 16 bpp looks a little weird.. that is.. all textures seem to be slightly transparent, like it is rendering quake as a top layer over the desktop background image (hard to notice but it sort of makes quake look all fuzzy).

on fairly modern hardware there is almost no difference in fps.. but 32 bpp does look (slightly) better!
