  • Transparent Water in Darkplaces / Monster skins

Hi there, long time Quake fan Brock here...

I have been wondering 2 things about my Darkplaces as of late:

    1. How can I get transparent water to work WITHOUT dragging my framerate down to 3 FPS when I look at any body of water?

I tried to go into my config and put in "r_novis 1" & "r_wateralpha .2" but it simply drags framerate down to nothing. Don't blame my video card or anything, I can run Crysis and COD4 with transparent water and specular on, so why can't I do it in DP? The other solution was to do that whole... "vispatch" thing. That didn't do anything. Help?

    2. Is there anywhere I can get OgrO's (or any similar texs) high res textures anymore? His site seems to not work.

    Any help would be nice!

This is plug and play for DarkPlaces, drop into c:\quake\id1 folder and start DarkPlaces. Ogro's skins look all wrong without real time lighting on:

Vispatching the maps is the only option. The original Quake maps are not properly vised for transparent water so without vispatching transparent water is going to be resource hog.

Not really that much for most engines, but DarkPlaces is far more demanding than other engines. I mean, with GLQuake or ProQuake using r_novis 1 and r_wateralpha .2 on any machine 1 Ghz or faster + decent graphics card is barely noticeable. But DarkPlaces is a more intense engine.

After vispatching, make sure r_novis is set to 0 otherwise you will gain no benefit.

DarkPlaces can be way more demanding on your system than Crysis. At 1024 res I get about twice the frame rate in Crysis. I think I'm going to have to upgrade my computer to play Quake 1.
