Extract or Move all the map files (example.bsp) to Quake\ID1\Maps\here

so , you should find it looking like this

    C:\quake\id1\maps\example.bsp

If you want to play the maps offline , then open quake
drop to your console with the Tilde button , and type in

    map example.bsp
hit enter, map should load fine

Err ... slight typo in Mindz's post

      Just type something like:

      map em48

in the console. Don't type .bsp!

I assume you are talking about single player maps. If you need more help, don't be afraid to ask.

Did you type "map rim" (without the "")? If so, what was the error message?

That can sometimes indicate that quake can't find the map, in which case check that it is in the folder indicated in the earlier post.

Also, to ensure that there is not a problem with your rim (oo-errr) have you tried running running another map?

                  Hope this helps

make sure you are in single-player-mode (start a new game and then try to load the rim map) cause if quake is in multi-player-mode and the map has no spawnpoints for players it will not load the map... also the map may be exceeding some "normal engine" limits.. using BJ's enhanced glquake will do the job in that case..

The "couldn't spawn server" error generally means that Quake can't find the BSP file. The most common reason is that you have it in the wrong directory, so - as mentioned above - it's worth double-checking.

Another lesser known reason is that the Quake filesystem is case sensitive. This only applies to items inside of PAK files, but it is easy to get caught out on.

You have to have registered Quake to play custom single player maps in general.

                        Type: map e2m1

                        in the console.

If it doesn't load, you don't have registered Quake (pak1.pak).
