  • FPS Problems

I dont know why in Quake I get really crappy FPS. If I run it in the lowest resolution (320x280 i think) it runs fine, when I go up they get terrible.

I have a very capable computer with a Pentium E6750 and a Nvidia 8800GTX video card. I can run all the newest games on high settings without a problem, but quake is slow!!

I tried to turn off VSYNC in the display settings, but it didnt help.

Anyone know what it could be?

What executable are we talking about here?

Are you using quake.exe or winquake.exe? glquake.exe? Or something newer like DarkPlaces or Qrack or something?

Whatever it is, I'm sure it's easy to fix (everything gets solved here ). But need to know what you are using.

        Ok, here is some information:

        1. Any variety of WinQuake including wqpro and wqpro399 is software rendering. Your video card doesn't matter because it doesn't use 3D acceleration. In addition, turning vsync off or on makes no difference for the same reason - that's your video card.

Let ask you this ... a couple of people have had issues with ProQuake 3.99z in regards to the external map download utility. In addition, some computers have issues with Winquake for reasons unknown.

First, try adding -dibonly to your command line. This will increase your FPS in WinQuake to usually a higher number (sometimes a lot).

If this doesn't solve the problem, do you have this problem when using ProQuake 3.50 (wqpro 3.50).

Also is this happening both online and offline or just one or the other and are you using wqpro399 instead of glpro399 on purpose or because you like wqpro better?

No, it's a command line parameter unfortunately. "c:\quake\wqpro399.exe" -dibonly (as an example).

It uses DirectDraw for the software rendering and sometimes you can double the fps. IF the problem is the fps and not something else (background process, rotten internet connection, some issue with the Quake client and your PC, your choice of settings intentional or not, etc.)

If I were you I would just start using a different client other than winquake. Put that good video card to good use and download Qrack. If you don't like all the new snazzy graphics effects just goto graphics options and turn on Classic Mode rather than high quality mode. You can adjust resolution and gamma from in-game as well.

edit: oh and use cl_maxfps to get it nice and smooth. Since you have an 8800 gtx I'd say put it to cl_maxfps 500.

Adding -dibonly to the comand line has made it worse. Now instead of FPS slowing down, I get a total FREEZE for half a second before it comes back. it also happens in single player, not only online

I will try the older proquake and qrack to see if that works

Post back what happens. In my experience, gl is a lot more consistent than WinQuake.

I concur , WinQuake at the most now days should be considered a novelty client. Qrack,GLPro,and DP are where you need to be.

This reminds me of how some idiotic people pays a few hundred bucks (300-500) for some peice of shit car, and then spends 2,000-3,000 dollars on some spinner rims to go on that peice of shit car.

                    lol
