  • Slow Under Vista

I'm running Quake through Dark Places on a 32bit Vista laptop, but get lots of hesitation in the game, usually when I'm in open spaces on any maps. As far as I know, there's nothing else running at the same time in Vista, so has anyone any ideas?

    Cheers in advance.

Have you used DP on another machine? DarkPlaces is insanely graphics intensive unless it is configured correctly when it is only ridiculously graphics intensive. Check out one of the many DarkPlaces threads here to find out about configuring RTLights and such.
What I'd really suggest is you grab QRack and play on an engine which gives you great graphics and frame rate with minimal configuration.

On the Vista side it's well worth disabling all the aesthetics like the 3D win-tabbing taskbar thumbnails, the sidebar and anyhing else you can find that doesn't look like it's from windows 2000.

I've got it running on a much older desktop under Windows 2000, and it runs fine, even with an improved texture/sound/everything else PAK. Setting Vista to run like its Win2000 doesn't make the blindest bit of difference on the laptop, though.

I had the same problem just running basic WinQuake, so I don't think it's a DP issue. I think it's -yet- another Vista issue. But thanks for the input, it's appreciated.

I have Vista (32-bit) and haven't had problem 1 with any Quake with the exception of older Qrack builds (Rook has since fixed).

Although Vista tends to be a magnet for criticism and blame, and perhaps rightfully so, I would look elsewhere for the problem. Namely video card and, well, if it weren't for the fact you are using DarkPlaces, the processor.

Since you are using DarkPlaces and complaining about slowness, I would recommend typing r_glsl 0 in the console and seeing if that speeds things up. Some engines without a clock-fix have can have issues on newer processors (FitzQuake, old ProQuake, Enhanced GLQuake) but DarkPlaces is not affected by that so that isn't the problem.

Don't get me wrong, when Vista works, I like it - it's just that it often doesn't seem to .

Anyway, I tried that command and it didn't make much difference. I'll try one or two other things and if I have no joy I'll use a different client (which would be a shame as DP is very pretty).

          Thanks for your time.

Adhere to the old adage that says, 'Always install the latest version.'

I've just swapped a 2007 cersion of DP for the latest 2008, and things are much better. Not perfect, mind, but a bit of minor tweaking should get things closer to that state, now.

Thanks for the help, both of you.:d

And in other News today,Microsoft the mecca-giant and it's most recent operating system took even more hit's today as many people complained about being "duped" into liking Windows Vista due to a ellaborate scheme to fool everyone into believing the next-gen Windows OS codenamed "Mojave" was the typical response to a failed Microsoft OS (Windows Mellenium anyone?) and thus re-reviewed, the same peice of shit they unrolled on January 30th,2007. Some people didnt catch on apparently.
              haha,sorry.
DarkPlaces is a nightmare for settings.Just turn everything off and incrementally re-enable all the spiffy effects until the point it is unsatisfactory.

and as a personal suggestion, unless you want DX10 for something special , kill Vista and go back to XP.
