  • Buy Quake or Download?

    Uhm..

I rushed to my CD archive to find my old Quake CD's.
I did find them alright, but...ehem...I can't read the discs. They're too old (from 2001). Yeah, i know....

    What do you do then?

PirateBay has a couple of downloads GL Quake + Win Quake). Seems to be the final versions made from original CD-ROM.

I guess it is impossible to get the originals anywhere now? I surfed a bit but didn't find a supplier.

    Any thoughts?

Nah, I don't have the original anymore. I only kept the last version we played back then (burned it to a CD).
Really a pitty, it had all the modified maps, sounds etc. and all

      Team Fortress, all mods.

I guess I'll have to wait for my torrent to finish in a day or two.

You could buy it again but I don't see what point that serves if you own it. I bought Quake twice because I lost my CD, but if you bought a game you should be able to play it.

Quakeone.com - Being exactly one-half good and one-half evil has advantages. When a portal opens to the antimatter universe, my opposite is just me with a goatee.

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

Hehe, no you misunderstand me a bit.

I do not own the originals anymore. Why keep so many CD's when the game was small enough to be placed on a single CD.
What I actually did back then was burning my entire Quake game folder onto a CD. But as I mentioned above the CD is unreadable now after so many years.

Nm, I got a copy of the original + Mission Pack 1 and 2 from PB last night (including covers and original soundtrack :d

A little investigation and fiddling should make me able to play it soon.
Rather exiting after all this time.

I understand there has been done a lot of work with Hi-Res textures etc.

The only question is how Quake will respond to a 3.8 Ghz P4 with XP.

that should work just fine! combined with a good gfx card, it should be able to run every possible client at good fps (except clients for non-windows os's )

It does run fine now. Thanks to you guys here on QuakeOne forums.
It is exactly as I used to play it back then. Even better in resolution of course.
FPS is now at 250, more than enough. The hardware is way ahead now.
Didn't try a time demo though, hehe

I lost my Quake cd a few years ago when I moved and a member here helped me "obtain" a copy the first time. The second time I just downloaded it via Bit torrent. I paid for it once, why pay again? I had a Unreal Tournament cd (out of 5?) that exploded in my computer when re-installing, but never replaced that game.

I don't worry about telling on myself because there are records of my quake activity online as far back as 10 years ago or so.

I hardly think ID Software will drag you into court if you obtained an 'illegal' copy of their game. There is no money in the game a such anymore.

Well... maybe they plan to release it on handheld/mobile when the phones get a little bigger.
I've been playing 'Orcs and Elves' + 'Doom RPG' on my Sony E. c902i lately.
It is not bad for a mobile game tbh. You get a feeling of nostalgia due to the characters and graphics. All in all a very good job with those.
