  • 3 x Start Help needed :)

All my old stuff is gone, so I can't refer to that material anymore.
I feel like a total beginner again. It is so long ago and don't recall much of it all right now.

I managed to get a full WinQuake last night. It runs perfect on XP as it is in 1280 resolution.
    Also got Mission Pack 1 + 2.

My CPU is a 3.8 Ghz P4 with all the RAM it can take etc.
Graphics is a Winfast PX 7800 GT.

My questions are stupid but essential:

    1. How do I make Quake start up in 1280 automatically? Is it something about inserting 'screen -1280' somewhere?

    2. How do you configure Quake to run on a free mouse look? (using the mouse to look in all directions and not only from side to side). Not funny having to jump up and down to hit flying enemies

    3. How do you get the smooth graphics (like transparent water etc.). Still called GL? Do I have to get new maps/*.pak files?

There was some kind of config-file for how the game was supposed to behave.
I remember we used to set some parameters for the Quake.exe-file to make it start up in a certain screen resolution.

I hope some overbearing samaritan can help me out on this.

And after you helped me you may laugh - but not now plz!

    Thanks in advance

    Mush

Use ProQuake 3.99 with in-game resolution changing.

Mouselook is in the menu as well.

      http://www.quakeone.com/proquake

Use the glpro399.exe, although there is a WinQuake version, WinQuake is crappy.

If you want transparent water, type r_novis 1 and r_wateralpha 0.5 in ProQuake 3.99 console and it will save from session to session. You can vispatch your maps (see Downloads -> Files -> Developer/Server -> vispatch) but that's your choice.

        Did what you proposed, Blake.

Now I have the classic problem: glidex2.dll not found

I know there is no point in copying this dll-file into the Quake folder as nobody owns a Voodoo card anymore.
I found this reply in a forum:
        http://www.duxcw.com/yabbse/index.ph...;threadid=2270

As far as I can see 'glpro399.exe' ask for a file I don't have any use for, maybe on the contrary.

What I don't understand is why this new developed 'glpro399.exe' ask for a file nobody has any interest in having/using. I thought this 'glpro399.exe' was the latest product on the field (especially made to serve GForce and Radeon cards?).

Using the normal WinQuake.exe as mentioned above works nice and smooth, but I can't change the settings I want to get a good game experience - such as the 3D rendered textures, get my freedom of movement with the mouse etc.

Is it perhaps because I've installed ProQuake 3.50 before the 4.00?

Delete or rename opengl32.dll in Quake folder.

That file is 10 years old for a 3dfx video cards made in 1996 and haven't been sold in 10 years.

The error message is not generated by ProQuake, but the OpenGL library on your computer and there isn't a way for the error message to be avoided in the engine code because the OpenGL stuff executes before the Quake engine even starts.

            Oh, w8 a sec, Baker!
Thanks for directing me towards the ProQuake 4.00 as you mentioned/linked to.

I tried the 'wqpro399.exe' instead. And now I do at least have the mouse working properly. What a relief :d

1280 x 1024 resolution is now at hand + free mouse movement.

Now I only need to work on the textures as metchsteekle was directing me towards above.
I remember we had *.bat file which contained all these commands for the game. But that can't be done now I guess with the new ProQuake 4.00. And prolly no need for it anyway.

The game doesn't look too bad in 1280 resolution, and somehow it is is quite funny to to play it with all the pixelated graphics, hehe.
But I know it can be much better. So, I need to get my card to work on these graphics somehow.

I haven't looked for an option for the graphics issue yet. Maybe this PQ 4.00 already has it.

I'm glad you are happy but I think you are missing something incredibly important.

              1) Delete that stupid opengl32.dll in the Quake folder
              2) Double-click glpro399.exe in the Quake folder.

Don't think about this, just trust me and do it and then if you want 10 paragraphs of explanation later I'll do that.

I trusted you, Baker, and I did what you proposed.

                And now I run Quake in a resolution of 2048 x 1536. What a nice change :d

Had to modify the config.cfg a bit. I like the Left + Right Strafe. (+moveleft, +moveright). I'm used to this in UT and feel a bit handicapped if I can't dodge away from attacks. But It works fine. It seems the config only shows a certain number of available slots to bind keys in the game menu.

Am I right to assume that a bind "[any key]" "0" (zero) will disable that particular key?

You helped a great deal. Many thanks from me. IOU 1. Hope to be able to return the favor

Now it is time for me to fiddle with the maps to get advantage of the transparent water, mirror reflections etc.
But as I suspect it is depending on the maps. That's why we used to 'VIS' the maps back then, preparing them for our Voodoo cards.

Is it 'legal' to use these maps in matches? Or are only original 'non-VIS'ed' maps allowed?

                      I don't have a monitor that supports that. :d

The config screen in Quake only shows certain functions, but you can bind anything to a key by doing 'bind x "whatever"[/quote]

You won't be able to connect to ProQuake cheat-free servers, but with the exception of the quake.crmod.com, the ProQuake cheat-free isn't used really any more because it offers no protection against wallhacking.

However, there is little advantage to transparent water because:

                      1. You won't see players under the water because no server runs vis'd maps, so from the servers point-of-view you aren't supposed to see those players.

                      2. Many servers have transparent water disabled. Actually most of them do. This means it forces your client to use r_wateralpha 1 (solid water).

I'll just skip the transparent water and all the other stuff then.
No fun if you can't join a server, right?

                        But it looks good though.

Everything runs just like it should. As I remember it was back then. With even better graphics.

Maybe this would be a good oportunity to say thanks to all those who kept the game alive and fiddeled the technical stuff so we all can play the game today.
                        Thanks, guys!
