  • Mission packs on Vista

Everybody says engines can run them simple enough but I want to know how. I'm one of these stupid people that likes to have installation instructions for extras to get them to run and runing instructions because two hours of trial and error to work out nothing works is not fun.

    Vista home premium.

    Version of quake 1.09
Versions of both mission packs uknown till I can get the damned things working.

And before you ask this computer can easely run them I didnt long buy this monster.

*looks down at chest* erm I'm not a man... That being said I do need help I've been missing playing the missionpacks for years now. I still remeber walking into the lovely industrial level of difficlty chooser and playing in the low grav room.

      *sniffle*

      I miss it...

OK few more details... I'm running quake under the Tenebrae engine and though it has stuff for the mission packs it dosent say how to run them or where to put the damned stuff. I've been useing trial and error and not got far (thank the gods for backups)

Dounloaded darkplaces and it seems to have nothing its suposed to. Loads of files but no way of knowing where to put them nor a start exe of any kind.

Is your id1 folder along with Darkplaces?

to run mods, it's Darkplaces -game and the folder the mod is in.

            This should be quite easy,

First, you download darkplaces engine, and the latest version is at "http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/files/darkplacesengine20080903beta1.zip"

Second, extract darkplacesengine20080903beta1.zip into your quake folder. So that in your quake folder there is a darkplaces.exe and a darkplaces-sdl.exe along side the id1 folder, the hipnotic folder, and the rogue folder.

Third, make two shortcuts of the darkplaces.exe. Right click on one of them, and left click on "properties". In "target" you can see something like this: "x:\game\quake\darkplaces.exe" (the "x:\game\quake" part will be different depending on where you place your quake folder). Change the target into this: "x:\game\quake\darkplaces.exe" -hipnotic

Validate your change to this shortcut, and do the same with the other shortcut, but this time change the target into this: "x:\game\quake\darkplaces.exe" -rogue

Please note that before -rogue or -hipnotic there is a space.

Now you should be able to double click on the shortcuts and play the missionpacks.

Well the system seems to work with Tenebrae but I think I may need to fiddle a litlte to get it to work with darkplaces but I can still play the games in the mean time.

Tenebrae and darkplaces can co-exist in your quake folder, I believe.

Though their savegames may not be compatible.

I really like Qrack. Very easy to mod.

I actualy like darkkplaces more for the lighting which Tenabrae dosent handle so well with colord lighting but the gloss on darkplaces and the gloss on tenabrae look completely diffrent. I prefer Tenabrae gloss purely because it seems to react to the textures not just go over them.

Darkplaces is much more acurate though as it uses old sky textures insteaad of some new skybox.

I may get all engines I can and compare them.
