Hey gang, i am totally new to the forums. I recently saw quake 1 for sale on Steam for 5 dollars and it made me think of the old days back in 1998 where my buds would play 10-20 player games in our highschool computer lab of quake 1 CTF/TF/DeathMatch. it was pretty kick ass. i used to love the grappling hook...ahh the old days.

anyways, when i saw it for sale again, it made me wonder if anyone else still players Q1 and all the mods. i stumbled upon this website and it looks like you guys still play. kickass!

i am not a computer person at all, and had a shitload of questions pertaining to getting Q1 running again and playing with others.

anyone willing to setup a chat session on AOL IM or mIRC? i would post my questions here, but there are just too many, and i would confuse myself.

the questions are about should i buy it or not, do i need a certain version to be compatible with you guys here, and then i have mod questions, etc...

anyways, if anyone is willing to spend a few minutes doing some Q&A's, please let me know and we can set something up.

    thanks alot, ttyl!

There are a lot of people on AIM. There are also a lot of people on IRC. Problem with IRC is getting someone who isn't just idling. Problem with aim is you probably don't know anybody on it.
You're probably better off posting your questions here, or visiting the guides section.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. Also, thanks for the welcoming.

Anyways, i will first try and catch someone in the mIRC. If i have no luck, i will start to post questions on the fourms.

I guess i can start with one. Does it matter where I get my copy of Quake 1? In other words, are there certain copies with specific files that i need, or is any version legit? If so, i was going to buy the version STEAM is selling.

i will be in touch, thanks again!

No, it does not matter where you get your copy of quake. There is really only one file you actually are required to buy in order to play quake, and this file is pak1.pak (everything you can download for free). If you buy Quake through steam, you will get this file along with pak0.pak, and some of the quake clients (winquake.exe, glquake.exe, qwcl.exe, glqwcl.exe).

In reality all you need to play Quake is pak0.pak and pak1.pak and a quake client that works. I would hazard a guess that nobody on this site uses the default quake clients (the ones that come with the steam package), and most use either qrack or proquake.

I got that id super pack thing off Steam too, since it was 50% off for the weekend. Quake 1-3, Doom 1-3, all of the HeXen/Heretic games, all the Wolfenstein games, and a few other minor treats, plus all expansions and mission packs for only 35$. Pro deal.
