  • Getting music working?

    Hey folks,

I just received my original Quake 1 CD in the mail (still in shrinkwrap! $0.01 on eBay!) and am wondering if it's possible to get the music to play during the game? I am using fitzquake SDL on Linux, and have the "CD music" cranked all the way up, but no music :-(.

I am curious how the original game engine used the music in the game, did it just loop the CD tracks? I found the CD music on the disc and ripped it to mp3, and I suppose I could just play the CD while I play the game, but that seems lame, since I wouldn't be hearing the songs on the levels they were meant to be heard on...

Tough question, especially with Linux being involved.

With DarkPlaces, you can convert the mp3s to ogg format and save to quake\id1\sound\cdtracks with names like track00.ogg, etc. and it will play.

I'm not 100% certain FitzQuake SDL support playing CDs, nor do I have a way to test that. The tracks themselves are indicated in each individual Quake map.

I'd ask that question in this thread (no registration required):

Otherwise you could fallback to the DarkPlaces method if you really wanted to.

The context of the answer with FitzQuake SDL would be whether or not it could play the music if the CD is in, FitzQuake SDL doesn't support .mp3.
