  • i found my cd...now i need some help

    Hello all,

I found my Quake CD, the one from 1996 with all the idSoftware games on it that can be installed after calling a toll free number to get a challenge code. (I even have the floppy with a copy of qcrack on it). Of course I can't run the installer on my WinXP machine.

Anyone have ideas/workarounds to get the installer to work on WinXP?

I'd try Dosbox. Worked with Redneck Rampage.

I've tried dosbox but that won't work. I'm trying to install the setup files (qinstall.exe and flox.exe). I've also tried running them with compatibility mode set to win95 and win98 with no luck.

Came across this on darkplaces website:
        ______________________________________________
How to deal with a DOS Quake CD on Linux
        cat /media/cdrom/resource.001 /media/cdrom/resource.002 >quake.lha
        unlha x quake.lha

If you can't get unlha or lha for your distribution, try using DOSBox to run the Quake installer.

        maybe it's possible to "copy/b " resource.001 and resource.002,
then unlha the resulting file (say, quake.lha).

        Just a suggestion.

It worked fine on my XP box over the years -- until I upgraded to SP3. Then I couldn't get jack sh*t to run.
