  • Silence of Quake

Bought Quake last week, that is 13 years after it came out so I derserve a right kick in the head for waiting so long. It is a truly classic game. But I am a Quake II and Quake III Veteran so thats gotta count for something.

Anyway, I've only one problem with Quake and that is that the Ingame CD Music doesnt play. I've had this problem with Quake II and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II for years but recently thats been fixed.

I'm playing Quake on DOSBox, thanks for any help.

Download DarkPlaces, and install it in your QUAKE/ folder. Live long, and prosper.

As much as downloading Darkplaces sounds fun since everyone on QuakeOne.com seems to have it or atleast be talking about it, i was hoping maybe there was something i could wright in DOS that would enable the cd Music ingame.

Appreantly R00k is an evil genius with rose tint sun glasses so surely your knowellege covers DOS as well. Thanks.

And sorry Mindf, Quake is 5 notches above classic. What a fool I am.

I guess you would need to use MSCDEX for accessing/mounting(?) the CD in DOS(box).

If you just don't want the washed out glquake looks and therefore use software rendered Quake, I suggest you do give Fitzquake a try. It looks much like good old software Quake. To get sharp textures like in software put "gl_texturemode GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_LINEAR" into your autoexec.cfg. For square particles use "r_particles 2".

Thanks Evil, I'll be having a look at the soundcard thing on Friday after my final exam. I'm waiting till after the exams to play Quake so i'll give it a go then.

Something nice to look forward to, eh?

I'll say on this thread if I manage to get the music working and how I did it so if anyone else wants to play Quake in DOS then i'll help ya get the music working.

Well, I thought someone converted the cd tracks to MP3, and that they were floating about the net, *cough*, and assumed DarkPlaces could emulate the CD tracks?

Rook, DarkPlaces uses .ogg not .mp3. fyi

I guess you guys can use DOSBox if that's what floats your boat but all the modern engines like, for instance as Spirit suggested, FitzQuake don't need DOSBox.

DosBox isn't being used to play Quake by any regular members of any of the Quake 1 communities around. Everyone uses FitzQuake or Qrack or DarkPlaces or ProQuake or on the Quakeworld side of things ezQuake or FTEQW --- all of these are modified engines.

If you want the grainy original Quake software renderer look, you can use WinQuake. Again, that doesn't require DOSBox nor does id Software's 13 year old glquake.exe

So while you guys all have to fight your anti-matter counterparts, me and my evil twin will be drinking a beer laughing at you guys ...

One time I actully put Dark Forces II on the lowest settings just to play it how it was when I got it on Windows 95 or 98. I'm not into state of the art graphics.

The surprising thing about Quake is even in its original form on DOS, it looks and plays really great and even by todays standards, on DOS, it is a superb game.

I tried a modern variation of Quake (it was still in its development stage) but even so, it just didnt have the same feel as Quake even though the level was the same.

Anyway, like I said before, I'll find out how to get the DOS version working perfectly and tell you guys how if there is anyone else who wants to play. Mind you you can just look on the internet, since thats all i'm doing.
