None of that will work. First thing you need is to unpack the PAK file (using PakExplorer or PakScape or similar), then zip up the unpacked files.

Just wanted to give a quick update to let you know that unpacking the pak files and putting them in zip form works.

Only one major drawback from converting the pak files zip in order to save space. No more Qrack or Darkplaces.

On another note concerning directQ, when I load Nehahra, the main menu is "off". When I select "options," it takes me to the help/credits screen. When I click on "play demo" it goes to "multiplayer." Also, Quit is not selectable at all. Choosing the "credits" option quits the game instead.

While converting all my mods from pak to zip format, I noticed some mods don't have any pak files. Like 5 rivers, hellsmash, and qoetia. Can I put the maps, sound, and gfx, stc. folders into a pak or zip file and the mod will still work?

IMO this is a pretty fruitless effort. If you're so low on free space that you have to run everything from a .zip archive, it's time for a new hard drive. In the mean time, I suggest doing this:

              e|------------------------0---------------
              B|---------------0^1----------------1----
              G|---------------2------2------0^2-------
              D|---------------2-------2--2-------------
              A|---------------0------------------------
              E|----------------------------------------

If you rename the zips to .pk3 they should at least also work with DarkPlaces (I don't know about Qrack). A pk3 is just a zip with a fancy name.

OK, it seems Neharha fucks with the menus.

I'm beginning to despise this mod for it's collection of cheap and nasty hacks. Another thing to fix - oh well.

Yup, I've done it myself for a few.

I play on a 2nd hand laptop with only about 30 gigs of space and I'm currently unemployed. That's why I'm so concerned with saving hd space. I certainly hope to get a new pc when I get a job and save some dough. Or at least an external had drive.

Yup, I've done it myself for a few.
How do I know witch files I can zip and which one's I can't? I noticed different pak files have different files and folders in them for each mod. Also, what do I name it? pak0?

a couple other things I noticed about directQ:

Not all my mods show up under the options menu where it says change mod directory.

It never plays the opening demos whether I play the original levels or load a mod.

When I choose to quit the game, it automatically quits instead of asking me if I'm sure. It looks like the screen to ask me if I'm sure pops up for a split second, but yes automatically gets chosen

In general you can zip everything aside from saves and screenshots.

Which mods don't show up? The method for determining a mod looks for certain files in the mod's folder, and I might be missing something. Even if it doesn't show up you can still access it using the "game" (or "gamedir"; both do the same thing) command at the console.

The quitting thing: some people wanted it so I did it.

Off the top of my head that I can remember, Coven of Ebony, Phantasmal Garrison 2, the tomb of chak toh ichak, and Soul of Evil in particular.

I always thought it was a good idea in case the player somehow accidentally hits the quit option. It would also be kinda cool if it gave little nasty messages like Doom and Wolfenstein 3d.

Maybe there could be some sort of console command or in the config file to turn yes/no confirmation off?

Is a pk3 file about the same size as a zip file? Larger? Or smaller?

I found another bug in the quit thing, so it'll be fixed in the next release.

I'm gonna check out those mods and see what the deal is.

A pk3 is just a renamed zip so they've the very same size.

Forgot to mention - you asked me about a name for the zip file. Call it anything you want, the engine doesn't care.

                            Ok. Thanks.

What about the opening demos playing when the game first starts? It never seems to play the demos.

That'll also be fixed in the next release. I removed it from one of the earlier 1.8s but decided that doing that was a mistake recently: mhquake: 1.8.2 Might be coming soon
