  • Plz Need HELP installing mods and maps!

    greetings to all,

here i am, a Noob, in need of help!

first of all, i must say, im not here asking for help out of lazyness, as i know it can be upsetting having people ask the simplest things. I have been at this for the last 3 days... Ive tried Googling reading and lots experimenting on intuition. But i still dont fully understand the workings of Mods - Maps - Engines- and all the wonderful things to make Quake more awesome.

I am Currently using Fitzquake, I have already downloaded and decompressed:

Travail -Travail soundtrack -Travail Skins -Grendel's Keep - A Roman Wilderness of Pain - (among others)

I put the decompressed files each in a folder named after the mod itself and put that folder in the Quake file - i also tried putting ALL the contents of ALL the files mixed together in the Quake file too. ( also changed the names of the Pak0.pak files to the name of the mod )

How do i run them -install them- activate them ? i tried typing the names of the files in the Game command (where one types the cheats )

i have tried all within my reason and intuition, but nothing- Please, if anyone could help me out with HOW TO's or step by step intrustions so that i may too enjoy the riches of Quake and this awesome site!

thank you , much much thank you! *cheers*

First up, can you say "please" instead of "plz"? Please? Using "plz" (and referring to the console as the place where you type the cheats) makes you seem like the lazy newbie you say that you're not.

Anyway, best thing to do is take it one step at a time. Quake is ancient and trying too many things at the same time with setting up mods can only land you in a heap of confusion. Pick a simple and small one, practice setting it up, get to know what's needed, then move on to the next step. Walk before you can run.

Having said that, it's not difficult, just plenty of traps to catch you out.

Best thing is to install Quake into C:\Quake. It makes it easy to find and keeps everything else clean. You seem to already have made a mess so let's start clean and trash the lot, then reinstall Quake to C:\Quake.

Open C:\Quake and you'll see a folder called ID1. Create a new folder called "mymod". Do nothing else yet.

Now run Fitz, bring down the console, and type "gamedir mymod" (without the quotes).

Play for a bit, then exit Quake. Open C:\Quake, then open mymod and you'll see a file called "config.cfg". That's the guts of what a mod is; a folder that lives alongside ID1 and contains additional content.

Now grab the truly wonderful Zerstorer. Have a go at installing it, but don't rename any PAK files, don't go near ID1. If you've done it right you should have two folders in C:\Quake, one called ID1 and one called zer. The one called zer should have a PAK0.PAK file in there as well as a few other bits and pieces.

Rename nothing. Put nothing into ID1. Quake only seems complex and fiddly on the surface, but in reality it follows it's own logic and once you understand it you'll find all of this easy.

Run Fitz again, bring down the console, and this time type "gamedir zer". If you've done it right you should see the background image change to a neat 666 picture. Open the menu, Singleplayer, New Game and you should be in the Zerstorer start map.

That's all there is to it. Try doing a few more yourself, but remember, rename nothing and don't go near ID1.

I need help with this as well. I was following your instructions mhquake, but when I got to the point where I type in "gamedir mymod" in the console, it says that the command "gamedir" is not known. Any suggestions? thanks

If you are using FitzQuake, the "gamedir" command (unlike very other of the 20+ modified engines with such a feature) is "game".

If you are using 1996 winquake or glquake, it doesn't have a "gamedir" command so use FitzQuake or DirectQ or ProQuake 4 or Qrack or DarkPlaces or whatever as your engine instead of 1996 winquake/glquake.

You might also consider using the Quake Injector ...

            I'd forgotten about the Injector.

Yes, grab that, use it, and wave your game selection pains goodbye.
